I stayed here with a friend for two nights in May 2005, and I must say that it's one of the better hostels I've stayed at in Europe. We were actually put in a newly built annexe at the other side of the street from the main building (where the reception is), so everything was extremely clean and fresh. We stayed in a dorm room with 8 beds and the security was excellent - there were 8 lockers in the room, all big enough for a large backpack. The bathroom was more hotel-ish than hostel-ish - again, very clean - and it's a very sociable place - we met more nice people here than anywhere else during our trip through Europe. The staff was also friendly enough and were quite helpful. Overall, it's great value for money. I would definitely stay here again if I went back to Vienna, and I can gladly recommend it to anyone.

This hostel has recently renovated (and still is), so we were lucky enough to get one of the new rooms, which was fantastic.Make sure you get one of these, or better yet, a room on the second level, as down stairs, the rooms are right next to the bar and kitchen, and everything echos, even up the stairs.

The kitchen is ok, but most people don't really bother to tidy after themselves, and breakfast is 2.50euros pp - for a plate with 2 rolls, a spread and tea/coffee. The bar is pretty cheap (a fact it likes everyone to know) and the staff at the 24hr receptionists are really friendly, even if you wake them up on coming in.

Friendly staff, a really good kitchen and common room area. Theres a lovely garden area to sit in. The bar is good, brings everyone together in the evening, and the musical intruments make it very atmospheric. The rooms are fine. The place is near the train station, and only a few underground stops from the centre of town. Fine.

I stayed here for one night in July and found it to be a very fun place. The courtyard was nice and tons of people were hanging out. True, you do have to press the water button a lot to shower but I hardly think that´s a problem. The staff is great, the location wonderful for Westbanhof station and it is a good value. All the rooms have sinks, which is a huge plus. We were very pleased

I stayed here for 3 nights in April. If you're a light sleeper I recommend asking for a bed in the new building, the "yellow house" over the road where there are only a few rooms and less corridor noise than in the main building. The rooms in the yellow house have linen provided, including delicious warm snuggly quilts. The water pressure in the shower is excellent and you get your own locker.

The kitchen is a little small, but they are apparently soon to renovate the kitchen in the main building and also put kitchenettes into the dorms in the yellow building.

I'd definitely stay here again.

I stayed at Hostel Ruthensteiner for two nights a couple of weeks ago, and found my stay to be very pleasant. The one thing I remember most about the place was how clean it was - the rooms, the bathrooms, the (very) small kitchen. I stayed in a 10-bedded dorm which had its downsides like people coming in and out at odd hours, but that's to be expected. I would definitely request next time to be put into a dorm with fewer beds. One thing that was a little strange was the set up of the shower. It wasn't in its own room, but rather a small cubicle in the hall. Combined with the fact that it was a push-button shower and the lack of space made it a bit frustrating. Other than that, Hostel Ruthensteiner is a great place to stay - good location (only a few stops from the centre of town by U-Bahn), nice atmosphere in the courtyard, and fairly cheap. Can't really go wrong there.

Stayed there for 5 nights, on a 4bedded room, with 3 of my friends, last year in June. Area is central located, very easy to get to the main atraction (by metro will be the best option). Hostel is extremly clean, safe and cheap. There was a woman that every day, from morning to evening clean the halls and bathrooms, the rooms, etc. The kitchen is small. No problem with bugs, security or anything. Great hostel.

Although this hostel wasn't my first choice for Vienna, I was extremely happy with the place! I stayed in a double room, which was very clean, although small. There was a bathroom immediately outside of my room, which was almost like having one to myself. Although the place was full, I never had to wait for the toilet or shower. It seemed like the bathrooms were constantly being cleaned, and the breakfast that was offered (for 2.50 euros) was excellent - freshly baked bread, jam, butter, and coffee/tea. The location was excellent, both close to the train station, public transportation, and a major shopping street in town.

The kitchen was TINY, which wasn't a problem for me, but it might be for someone who plans to cook a lot. There also didn't appear to be any common/TV room; the pretty courtyard out back was the only place for socializing. The internet service was extremely reliable and quite fast, although it cost 2 euros for 25mins.

Overall, definitely a great place to stay in Vienna!!

Walking for the first time into my dorm room i was a little shocked. 30 beds - i counted! Like in the army. At night some inconsiderate people were making lots of noise, talkign loud, dropping things etc... I guess not surprising with so many people staying in one room! Also, there are few bathrooms, although I was lucky and never had to wait.

In the end it wasn't so bad and I enjoyed my stay there. It's clean and eveyone had their own locker. The courtyard is very very nice. The location is good and the price is honest.

We stayed here mid July, in the large 32 bed dorm after being turned away by Wombat due to lack of beds. The location is OK as long as you dont mind buying a 3 Euros worth of metro tickets a day to get into the centre or walking alot. Facilities were fine- washing facilities were at western rather than eastern european prices and standards which is both good and bad I suppose! Showers were fine if not as many as needed- queues in the morning.

Met some cool people as well, including cool aussie girl and a ~10 year old chinese boy who we played giant chess against. The courtyard bit is really fun with tables and they had a couple of guitars to mess about with. However I feel that Wombat was a nicer hostel and a smaller room would have been better due to a very loud snorer on the first night.
