I'm a big fan of cheap and cheerful but it doesn't cost much to clean the place! Sorry, but dirty toilets and dirty showers shouldn't be acceptable, even at bargain prices. And yes, security is poor also.. luckily Bruges isn't exactly a crime capital. That said, the attached bar is really great, excellent music, quirky clock, interesting people and good, cheap food. My advice...stay somewhere else but be sure to check out the bar.

I spent one night in Brugge which is enough to see the whole city. The Bauhaus was well-located with an Internet cafe two doors down. I found the place to be clean, and the staff to be very friendly. The bar downstairs is really great with a cool clock above the bar that always runs backwards.. after a few Belgian beers you'll love it! Security seemed a bit weak with skeleton keys for the doors (lots of other places have gone the key-card route) but I encountered no problems. Would stay here again.

The Bauhaus is a good hostel. I found it clean and the bar was good and cheap. The other people there and the locals in the bar made it a good mix of people. The price is definitly right. The food in the bar is the best I've ever seem a hostel serve.

I'm sorry that a lot of people don't like this place, but I've stayed there twice, and I'll stay again if I go back to Bruges. I agree, security is not good, and its not the smartest place around, but the bar is fantastic, the staff are generally nice, mainly travellers themselves, and the meals are good value. A lot of locals use the bar, and I always found them really friendly, it is a good place for meeting local people.

We had heard such great things about this hostel from different reviews and such, boy was it horrible. The bathrooms were the dirtiest we has seen on our 2 month trip and their were stains in the bedroom that i wouldn't even guess at. Security was a big issue, the door to the bedrooms opens right out onto the street and the bar lures some strange locals. I met a couple of travellers that had things stolen. The keys to the room will open anyones room, when we found that out we left.

This was definately the worst hostel i have stayed in yet. The toilets were disgusting, the showers were scary and the ceiling was leaking. Bar and food the only good thing. I moved to the Passage on Dweerstraat which for only 12euros was so much nicer - clean and very very groovy with an excellent restaurant downstairs and low cost options. Brugge is such a beautiful city, it's a shame the Bauhaus couldn't be just as nice.

the biggest problem i had with this place is that security is non existant. anyone in the world can walk upstairs, go into any room and take whatever they want to. it happened to some guy i talked to when i was checking in and he was calling the police to report his stolen backpack. the showers were awful, the drains didn´t work, there was little privacy. i moved hostels because i didn´t feel safe or comfortable here. the staff is okay, the food is good and well priced, but you can just come to the bar and hang out without having a room there. stay at snuffel sleep in, it´s so much better. i met great people here, and we went all over bruges together. (we also all changed hostels together.)

We were there in off season (NOV). Very poor beds and dirty sheets. Make sure you bring a sleep sheet. The bathrooms and shower rooms were also scary. On the other hand, the breakfast for extra cost is well worth it, and the bar is excellent for meals and to just hang out.

The Bauhaus Hostel located ideally, right in the centre of Bruges. It has its own bar and serves good food at a reasonable price. Also the hostel organises tours where you're brought by bus to a destination about 15 km from Bruges and make your own way back by bike, which is well worth doing (though sore on the bum after a while!). Rooms are basic but well kept - only DO NOT leave your window open at night or the mosquitos will drive you crazy!! Staff here are pleasant. Breakfast costs a bit extra but it's substantial. Great spot.
