i was there for a week last month and had a good time! stayed in the massive dorm upstairs and i have no complains of hygiene. i told them when im leaving so there wasnt any wake ups in mornings. after i saw what i wanted in prague it was cool to hang out in zizskov, loads of cool bars and a great beer garden in the park near by. when i get back to prague i will defenetily go back to clown!

After reading the reviews here I thought I'd check it out.. expecting a fun, cheap and quirky hostel..Let me just burst the bubble on that myth. The place is an absolute dive! Arrived on a cold April morning, and found it by the conveniently located dump bin outside. Well they may as well empty the whole place in there. When we checked in with the 4 of us - we expected that we would be able to get our own room. Instead, we were placed into 1 of the 3, 5-bed rooms with a single person in each of them! Not all bad.. and with the thought of meeting someone new in our minds we trudged up the stairs.... Graffitti everywhere, dust, dirt and grime, but as we got to the 5th floor, the smell of raw sewage nearly knocked us out! Then came the room. 5 beds that looked like something out of a prison. Massive stains (don't even want to know what they were) on all of the mattresses and the sheets they gave us didn't even cover the mattresses. To cut a long story short - we ended up leaving after finding somewhere (Ritchie's - highly recommended) right in the centre of town... The only reason that the Clown and Bard gets even 1 star is because they gave us our money back in full when we decided not to stay!

the hostel was quite good really. for only 10 Euros per night (400Kc), i stayed in a room with 7 beds. it was actually more an apartment-style room, with a loft and single beds rather than dorms. we had an ensuite bathroom and our own little kitchen area.i never tried the 99Kc all you can eat breakfast, but there was a cafe/restaurant across the road that served breakfast from 9am...only 69Kc for eggs, bacon, ham and toast! cheap coffee and good milkshakes too.the reception is open 24 hours which was lucky as we arrived late at night.i would recommend ringing a couple of days before arriving to confirm or make a booking, as they were nearly full over the new years period.the reception staff were very helpful and spoke good english. they were also good about paying for accomodation - you could pay in the morning or in the afternoon...whenever was more convenient. re the problem with being woken up every morning: tell them ahead of time how long you wish to stay for and it avoids this problem!re key deposit: there is a sign up in the reception area that tells you that you must check out by 10am to receive your key deposit back.a tip: try to have some Kc´s in small denominations before arriving, as they sometimes run out of change.

Nice place generally, but when we left, we were refused our 100ck key deposit because we were leaving after 10am. I don't object to this as a policy, but I do object to the fact that we weren't told about it when we checked in.

This hostel is located in Zizkov, an inner city suburb of Prague. The hostel is about a five minute walk from a metro stop, and about a 10-15 minute walk from the city center (although this is not obvious at first.) Although it may not seem like much at first, the neighborhood is actually an interesting one, including one of Prague's better rock clubs, some good restaurants, and some heritage for its role as a birthplace of the Velvet Revolution. There is a laundromat (laundrette) within about five minutes walk of the hostel; handy, as the hostel has no laundry facilities. The hostel rooms vary in quality -- there are some flat-style dorms located in upper floors of the building that are a bit crammed together, but decent, with ensuite bathrooms. The dorms near the bar on the ground floor are less desirable, small and cramped with bunkbeds crammed together a bit too close for me. Hygiene was fair, but not great. During my stay, some guests complained about bedbugs, but I personally didn't experience this. The staff was a mixed bag, often apathetic and surly, and more intent on partying than managing the hostel. One obnoxious practice -- expect them to enter your room during the morning and awaken you to ask you whether you intend to stay or checkout, a pretty rude awakening if you ask me.The main attraction or drawback of this place, depending upon your perspective, is the ground floor bar. Many of the guests are Aussie, American and Canadian backpackers looking only to party hard every night in the hostel bar -- many of them seem to travel no more than 100 meters from the place for days at a time. I met some good people, but this hostel seems to be a magnet for obnoxious sorts who take no interest in anything local but for the cheap beer. The Clown & Bard is a hostel that seems to draw strong reactions, both positive and negative, so consider this as you choose. Personally, I like a good party hostel, but I won't be going back to this one. But if your favorite view of Europe is through the bottom of a beer bottle, you will be more than welcome here.

This place was all right. The staff was okay, the rooms were okay, the showers were almost okay, and breakfast was a little better than okay. You could probably do a little better in terms of location and cleanliness, but overall I was satisfied with my stay. The restaurant across the street is fabulous.

What can I say, This was easily the best hostel I stayed at throughout all of Europe. It had the chillest atmosphere possible, fantastic rates, and an awesome restaurant right accross the street called "Mestre" which I definitely recommend. while I may appear far away from the Old Town center, Its not for anyone who doesn;t mind walking ten minutes extra. All the awesome backpackers seemed to congregate at this hostel. In other words while they still love to party its devoid of the frat boy American types scoured throughout Europe. People here are down to earth and extremely easy to get along with. Defintitely head it here
