I stayed in mid august 2003, and granted it was hot all over london, but this place doesnt even own a fan. the security was good, staff very nice, good location, useable kitchen, reasonable internet (50p/30min), curbside pickup for straytravel tours. BUT, when i checked in at about 11am, clean sheets werent available until the afternoon, and my duvet looked like it had either been a tablecloth at a bacchanal or a communal napkin at an indian restaraunt. it could have been puke, but i was optimistic. my matress had multiple brown and yellow stains in the obvious places. i was so tired i was delirious and just wanted to take a nap, which was obviously impossible on any level. there was only one toilet and shower for at least 20 people, and after one guy got a hold of the toilet, everyone had to use the ones upstairs. while upstairs i could see down a shaft of sorts to the windows on the lower levels, and i watched a mouse jump in through the open window and disappear onto peoples gear and beds. the shower was tiny and had no hooks whatsoever. the bed was only comfortable if you are either exhausted or extremely hardy. i would defintely give this place a pass unless its the only thing left in london, and any more than one night would be a trial.

Hide Park hostel is in a very good location, just in front of the Hide Park, and one minute by foot from the tube. There is a nice pub in the basement, where you can meet people and have fun.

On the other hand it's the dirtiest place I've never been: extraordinary dirty bathrooms and beds, too! And the breakfast is poor.

The location, and price, of this hostel are perfect for students traveling to London. But, beware of the other guests and staff of this hostel. The staff was incredibly friendly until some of our belongings were stolen, and then they turned shady and unwilling to help. The hostel is also noisy and dirty.

i was recommended this hostel by some friends, and was very disappointed. the room i was assigned was filthy, as were the bathrooms. the place is colourfully painted, but very run down. the staff are very nice, australians, etc., but they did not make up for the yucky facilities.

also, a lot of people seem to live here long term, so if you're into that it's good, but if you're not, it's not. also, it's expensive for what you get, although it is in a fairly nice location. location, however, doesn't matter too much in london, as you will probably spend half your time on the tube no matter where you're stationed.

I've been staying a few days each week for the past three months now and will continue to do so this summer. The staff are friendly, the location is great and it's a pretty decent, albeit basic, place to stay in London. The only thing I'd like to see improved is adding a reading room/quiet room to the existing facilities but other than that, it's good enough to keep coming back - particularly as the staff are so lovely!

Well I'm not sure about these other people's reviews, but I have stayed here on and off for a couple of months between travelling and have always had a great time!

I have found the people that work there to be really friendly and helpful even to the people that are rude to them! (which is quite rare in hostels!)

The hostel was clean and in a really good spot, right opposite hyde park. As for the bar, it was just travellers and there was no trouble or anything else as suggested. I have told my friends to stay here when they come and in fact I am booked in again this weekend!

A great place if you want to score some nice pills. Just hang around in the bar for a few minutes, they'll practically find you! If that's not your thing, cheap beer and so on. The staff are rude if you're stupid (losing your key for example). I guess I didn't have that problem... Hell, you probably deserve it, if you don't like it, go and have a cry at the next hostel. Boo hoo hoo.

Okay, so it is not the Hilton Hotel and facilities are quite basic but this is a very friendly hostel with helpful staff and a pleasant backpackers environment. The location is superb and the only major thing I found problematic is that the dorms were quite noisy. Even so, I am happy to extend my stay...

The worst reviews of this place are right- it was filthy, it stunk, the staff was nominally helpful and occasionally downright hostile. My brother and I stayed here for Xmas week: the toilets were only occasionally 'in service' on our floor, the first night my brother developed a rash, the second night I found a dead mouse in my bag, the third night there was a mouse in the trash can in our room. When it rained the ceiling leaked (and we were on the second floor) so there were containers set up by the staff to catch the water. After it stopped raining our floor developed that funky, mouldy smell. 2 good things that still should not make you stay here: great location (but find another place to stay; there were plenty of other rentals in the area), and lots of fun people (but just go to the bar at night- general public just walked right in).

We stayed here in Sept/02 for 4 nights. The location is great, close to 2 tube stations and lots of shops and services. The hostel itself was pretty bad, the higher up in the building you went the more rundown it became: the walls were in bad shape with holes/dirty streaks/graffiti throughout and duct tape covering the holes worn in the carpet. We didn't see any mice but there were traps around. The bathrooms and showers were pretty clean though, and the bar was cheap. Oh, and the breakfast was terrible! Try the Hyde Park Inn, some people we met went there after one night at Hyde Park Hostel and said it was much better.
