Having stayed at 20 or so hostels in Europe these past few months, it was nice to arrive in London to a friendly hostel. I chose the 16-bed female dorm for £70 a week. Not as bad as it sounds and to be honest it is less obtrusive than staying in a tiny 4 bed room.Plus side: Modern reception, staff who know London, cheap interent, clean rooms and the conversation inducing lounge area. Also the mix of people, mostly European and of all age groups.Minus: - Showers, semi private, but it would be nice to have somewhere more privste to change. Though this didn't bother the Dutch girls there.- the breakfast...orange juice would be nice! - Maybe wireless interent would be good-Security, ok needed, but gets annoying entering codes all the time.- Hope this helps.

I was there in september 2003,the room are too small and its not clean at all the shower are not welcoming,as for the kitchen well i didn't like it,but its a good location in central london!

Ya, thanks to all the team at the Ashlee. Thumbs up for a cheap place to stay in London. Would recommend if you are going on a Busabout tour.etc. Keep up the good work guys.

I stayed at the Ashlee House on August 4, 2003. I liked the kitchen, reception, and lounge/Internet area. On the negatives, the room I was in was extremely small (it felt like a prison cell), there was no hot water (morning or night), and the woman who worked there and checked me in seemed to hate her job (or was autistic and had no social skills). I would avoid the Ashlee House on a return trip to London.

I differ from the other posts. I chose Ashlee House because it does not have a bar. I know many people like the idea of hanging out in a hostel bar, but sharing a room a bunch of guys drunk on cheap beer in a major annoyance. I'd rather get out and try the local nightlife. London's pubs are after all fantastic.

As other posts say Ashlee House looks good, but the rooms are a bit tight. Pretty relaxed atmosphere and knowledgeable staff. There are a few other hostels in the area, my friend stayed at the Generator, which we went to as it has its own bar and cheap drinks.

I stayed here 14 months ago. As per other comments, I was not impressed with Ashlee House. Overall, I thought it was boring and too basic. That I gave it another chance was by accident. Anyway, who ever have been responsible for this amazing tranformation deserves congratulations.What has changed. Firstly, they now have a nice spacious lounge area, with soft lighting, couches and even beanbags. A new, I guess you call it designerrecetion area with some funky sheepskin couch covers and interesting wallpaper makes for a great initial impression.The Internet area (3 terminals, flat screens, plasma) is neat and good value at £1 p.hThe bathrooms have also had attention. Those cleat shower screens, which for those who are shy, where just hideous. They have been replaced with privacy screens, enable for a relaxing shower. Wooden duckboards are a top idea as well.The rooms are indeed bit on the tight side, but the with a nice dova and crisp sheets, I was fast asleep pretty quickly.In the morning, breakfast was pretty good, real coffee would be nice though. I liked the fact that their staff know London and they even had a London specials black board. Great advise lead to visiting the Citte of Yorke pub, which I would never have found and also Spitalfields market. To be sure The Ashlee House is 1 or 2 pounds more expensive that some London hostel, but worth it, especially for the local knowledge!
