Ashlee House has changed a huge amount since I visted 2 years ago, I mean completly. Amazging reception and a relaxing lounge area( which shoud have been added years ago!). Overall a really nice place to spend a couple of nights.

after a bad experience at another london hostel, i thought ashlee house was really good. my room was clean and warm, the breakfast is great (choice of 3 cereals, toast, tee and coffee) and the staff were generally ok (not overly helpful or polite though). the internet was quite cheap compared to most other hostels in the uk (50p for 24 minutes). also smoking wasn't allowed in the kitchen/tv room, which i thought was a great idea. for the smokers out there, smoking is allowed in reception, where there are many seats. security was excellent and a tube station is 5 minutes walk away. plus kings cross station is on the picadilly line - the line that heathrow airport is on. one bad thing: the shower doors are glass and are directly opposite the toilets. they have a pretty embossed pattern on them (not necessary!), but if they were opaque, one wouldn't have to jam a towel in the door. there is little room for drying so you have to leave your clothes outside the shower (in a plastic bag, as some of the shower doors leak.my room (4 beds) was a little squashy but this was a minor thing.overall a pleasant experience.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The location is fantastic. The rooms are clean and the breakfast is good. The bathrooms could look better (as mentioned in an earlier review) but I believe they are in the process of being redecorated...overall highly recommended!

I had a 2-night stay here last week (January 2003). I'll be staying here again.The booking was done by email and handled very efficiently. I twice had to call up as my arrival was delayed and again, these matters were dealt with very well by the staff. The level of service from the staff was very good on the whole. I was in a 4-man room which is VERY small. If all 4 of you were in there at the one time it would be a space problem ! Fortunately I had the room to myself the first night, and another guy was in there the 2nd night, but it would have been crowded with 4 guys AND luggage. What they can do about this I don't know. There was no space for luggage storage or lockers in the room apart from under the beds. Both bedding and the room appeared to be clean. Wash hand basin in the room as well.Showers and toilets were adequate, BUT this hostel was not very full and I can imagine a queue developing when they're busier. Water pressure was a bit on the weak side and they could do to fix the toilet door locks, otherwise OK.Breakfast was a cut above that served in other places that I've stayed at. The kitchen is a decent size (OK, so I didn't use it at all, apart from eating breakfast there). You can eat as much cereal and toast, etc, as you like. Definite bonus. Bring your own nescafé if you're a total instant coffee snob like me (they only serve the nasty powdered variety !). There's a TV in the kitchen. Internet machines (2 of) in the downstairs reception area, which is the only smoking area in the whole place. Internet machines on the expensive side ... 50 p for 24 minutes, a whole hour for a pound, I think. The location is great: 2-3 minutes from King's Cross mainline station, and even closer to the Thameslink station (direct connection to Gatwick Airport). Lots of shops and restaurants close by.There were one or two small niggles. Small maintenance issues, such as a plug socket in the room which was half-hanging out of the wall, locks on the toilet doors needing replacing, water pressure in the showers, but these are really minor things. I had 2 good night's sleep and a hot shower in the morning, which is really all I wanted. I think the price is a couple of pounds over the odds, frankly, as it was £17 and goes up in high season. You can do cheaper elsewhere but overall I was satisfied. I'd have given them 4 1/2 stars instead of 4 if the price was a bit lower ... no-one EVER gets 5 stars !! I'm a little surprised by the very negative comments posted by other Bugeurope users ... my experience was very different.

The person in the lower bunk of my bed had a "guest." The lights were even still on! I complained to management, but all they did was move me to another bed in the same room, never reprimanded the offensive party. It just gave an overall sleazy feeling. Also, showers had standing water and the night attendant was having an all-night party with some of his friends. All and all a nightmarish experience.
