WHEN YOU CAN FIND A PLACE THAT HOLDS OVER 800 PEOPLE, WITH A BAR AT VERY GOOD PRICES I DON'T SEE HOW YOU CAN GO PAST THE GENERATOR. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PRICE IS REASONABLE AND THE STAFF ARE EXCELLENT

Honestly, have any of you bufoons who unleashed a tirade on this place actually stayed in a hostel before? For Christ's sake you're not gonna get the waldorf astoria for 12£ a night. After reading all these reviews before leaving for London, I was more than a little sceptical, but decided to go for it anyway, as you will NOT get anything cheaper than 12£ a night in zone 1, no matter what these clowns say.How can you bitch about the bar? Pints for one pound is nothing short of a miracle in London, and even after happy hour they're still only £2 which is a great deal. People are whining about how the bar lacks character. It's a frickin Hostel! If you want character why don't you go pay £2.90 a pint somewhere else with a bunch of locals who won't fraternize with you and end up leaving at 11pm when that pub will close.I ended up on the 1st floor, thereby worried about all this noise people spoke of keeping me up. The truth was I couldn't hear a damn thing (save those annoying suitcases with wheels on the cobblestones) and besides, even if you are using miracle ear, any normal backpacker will be so exhausted from a day of puttering about London that they'll be asleep in no time. Now on to the breakfast. Again, disregard all that these incredibly ungrateful persons have written. How do you get off whinging about an all you can eat Free breakfast? There are six kinds of cereal for the love of God!!! Obviously you degenerates have never stayed in a hostel before, as if you had you would realise how tremendous this is for brokeass students; if you thought it was so gross, then quit bitching & go spend 3 or 4 quid on breakfast elsewhere. The showers are nowhere near as bad as these people make them out to be, though it is true the longer you wait ie anytime past maybe 10am, the less warm they become, although for me they were never actually completely lacking in warm water. Before coming I was also worried about some others' comments on not being able to meet people in such a big place, as I was travelling solo. In fact, even though I'm about as sociable as a doorknob, I met some terrific people with ease, and though I have stayed in over 30 hostels in my time, I was saddest to leave this one because of the terrific friends I had made in my short stay. Please, potential Londongoers, unless you are a puritanical bible thumper or a geriatric pensioner, ignore what these idiots had to say & at least consider the generator. There is absolutely no way you can beat its location for the price - if you were only interested in seeing central London you wouldn't even need a tube pass as long as you've got a good pair of legs. (before arriving there I stayed at the Intl Student House by Regent Park, which wasn't bad but was so hot & stuffy I couldn't sleep) In addition to all of this, it's right beside a Safeway - what more could you ask for? Yes the whole steel factory/space station motif is a little cheesy, but quite frankly, who cares what it looks like, as long as the beds are comfortable, which mine was. My only complaint would be the unreasonable internet prices (although I couldn't really find much cheaper in town) and the alarming number of American employees. Because really, who likes Americans? (Especially that idiot working in the bar who played blink 182 every five minutes)No I'm not an employee, I'm just rather angry at all these knobheads who bashed this place when really they were getting exactly what they paid for, and who almost cost me missing the chance of meeting some great people through their unjust criticisms.

ok - there are a lot of reviews of the gen here, and as someone who lived there for 2 months and has been going back there for over 6 months to visit friends, i felt i should put in my 2 cents! you may feel it's a biased opinion, but i (and many of my friends) wouldn't come back here every other day because the place was no good!1) yes it's loud, it's fun, it's pretty cheap, the bar will always keep you entertained and you should stay here.2) as with ALL hostels in europe, there can be unclean bathrooms, a lot of noise etc...but there are 837 beds!3) the staff are always helpful and easy going (and no i am NOT one of them)4) free movies on sundays, free games every night, the cheapest pints in london, there's always someone to chat to...what else do you want? it's a cool place to stay for a day or a month - if you don't believe me the try it for yourself!

I stayed here in November 2003.This hostel is in a great location with Walking distance of Oford Street?Tottenham Court, the University College, Euston Station, Kings Cross. Very good laid back location and neighbourhood has plenty of shops, restaurants and a very large grocery store. The hostel itself is quite huge and is open 24 hours. Has a bar that is open late with good prices. People are very young here, many students and aa lot of partying. But noise is controllled and its no problem sleeping when you want to. I always travel with earplugs and the noise was never above that level.Dorm rooms are okay for the price. I stayed in a 4-bed room, which was not clean but not too dirty. The rooms have electronic combination locks so ech person entering is identifiable and they have lockers that you can use. Was safe in that area.HOWEVER: beware that the bathrooms are filthy - at least the men's bathrooms. They reeked of age old, stale urine and were really a drag to go to. From what I have heard, this place started off newly renovated a few years ago and was clean back then. The reception/hallways are okay but its just very obvious that they don't really care about the bathrooms. Clearly it will will only go downhill.I'd stay here briefly since its cheap and fun envronment, but if you're a guy and care about bathroom cleanliness, I'd give it a pass. Female toilets may be the same, but I cant say for sure.

I was there for only two nights in February this year but had a blast!First, the myth of cold shower is untrue; I had no problems. Overall, cleanliness is pretty good everywhere. Not as many Americans there as some posters have commented. (!)Friendly, smiley staff everywhere. Fellow backpackers were mostly all very friendly and eager to meet others. You don't stay at the Generator for its tranquility; rather, this is the place to meet young people and party all night at the bar if that's your sort of thing. At the very least, try out the Generator once while you're in London and make your own assesment!BTW, London air is filthy!Cheers all..

I stayed at this place for a weekend in November. It is true that the showers are cold and the rooms not too great, pretty small. You do get drink vouchers. Unfortunately they are only valid for one hour during the whole night. Prices for drinks at the bar were quite reasonable I thought. I did enjoy the bar, good music, nice party. There are a lot of young people that obviously do not know their limits and throw up all over the place- but, hey been there done that. We were probably all like that when we were younger.Breakfast is ok, especially the selection of cereals. Unfortunately there is not really enough seating space for everybody. There are definitely better places to stay, but there are worse too. And if you're only staying for a short time, this is an ok place to stay.

It has been some time (4 years) since I stayed at the Generator with a large group. I recently found this website and was not surprised to see the deplorable reviews, which accurately reflect our experience. I could spend time saying exactly the same as everyone else, but let it suffice to say that every pathetic detail is true. The miserable rooms, disgusting bathrooms, surly staff, degenerate residents, pitiful food (which always seemed to wind up in a half digested state the next day on the bathroom floors), ... yep, that's the place I remember. The favorable reviews MUST have been written by staff, or the above mentioned degenerates who enjoy late night pisshole, pass-out, & puke scene. Trust me, if you are over 14 and have already had your first beer?... take a pass on this disaster!

Arriving after a 21hr plane flight to Heathrow, I was really looking forward to a hot shower and was delighted to get one... a week later. You see I had a week booked in the Generator in London, a thouroughly dissapointing experience for all.Lousy service, lousy bar, lousy bathrooms, and to top it all off, even lousier food. Sat in the comfort of my Melbourne home, the Generators offer of 'Dorm, Dinner and Drinks' seemed quite attractive. At the end of the week I still had all 7 dinner vouchers, 5 drink vouchers, a headache from the noise and a burning desire for a comfortable bed, away from the noise, the smell and the insomniac, pisshead roommates. So go on, stay there, choose not to heed my advice. But when you come crawling back remember, I'm the kind of guy to yell at you, "I told you so!"
