Close to Regent Square, this hostel has a very convenient location. Try to take a room on one of the higher floors as it is quiter. The breakfast (which is free) included no less than FIVE different types of cereal. It was cheap and cheerful - a fun-tastic experience!(P.S. Bring a small lock for the lockers. You've been warned!)

i stayed in the generator for one night (was booked in for four). i went through the trouble of re-packing everything and hauling arse half way across london just to get away from that god-awful place. the reviews going on about drinks vouchers and the laundry are a load of bullshit posted by the staff to try and counter act all the awful reviews they're getting. you cannot sleep. my bed was actually vibrating from the hideous noise coming from the bar (and i was on the 5th floor!!) all night. some one vomited in the hallway just outside my room and i saw TWO cleaners just step over it and keep walking. the showers are disgusting, the rooms are cramped and barely furnished, the staff are unhelpful to the extreme. i spent 20 minutes in the bar and was mauled by drunked idiots twice. i can't diss this place enough - save yourself the money and stress and go somewhere.. ANYWHERE else.

The generator is overpriced and cheesy. For the same price you can get another hostel in London with better and cleaner facilities. The bathroom was dirty, infrequently cleaned, and reminded me of a high school locker room in both its decor and its smell. As a previous reviewer said, many of the positive reviews seem to have been written by hostel staff trying to plug the free drink coupon (which is only valid before 7PM) and the 24 hour laundry (which is overpriced). As for "the cute guy" the hostel staff member...er backpacker... met, good for her. When I walked by the bar it seemed to be filled with rather deperate backpackers trying to meet girls and not succeeding very well. I won't specifiically reccomend another hostel, but if you look in a Let's Go or Lonely PLanet, or this website, it should be pretty easy to come up with some alternatives. The postitives to this place are the fact that it lets you stay for free (if you work two 14 hour days a week snd its location, which is close to many major ttractions (but a Tube pass makes access to most places very easy), so not really that many positives. I guess there are other hostels in London which are dirtier, so 2 stars

Overall the Generator was one of the best on our trip. It has everything including 24 hr. laundry. The travel desk was very helpful and the hostel is pretty secure. Breakfast is instant coffee, toast, & cereal. Pretty good compared to what most hostels offer. You can hear the music from the bar until 2am but if you are exhausted it won't keep you up. The rooms on the lower floors seem to be larger than the rooms on the upper floors. The bathrooms were okay, pushing the knob every minute for more water got annoying and they could have been more clean. The location is great (by the British Museum) and there is a Safeway just down the street. I would stay there again and tell my friends to go there as well.

The Generator has so many activities for travelers, it's hard to leave the hostel. It's centrally located near a tube station right on the Picadilly Line. The bar is open until 2am (3 hrs after the pubs in London close) and you get a free drink coupon when you check in. They have entertainment every night, and the movie night on Sunday was appreciated after a long tour around town. Beds are comfortable, but the bathrooms are a little dingy. All in all, a great place to stay.

Normally I'm a light sleeper (and this sucks when you're backpacking and staying in dorms) and have trouble with noisy. Maybe it's because I was so tired after backpacking for 8 weeks that it didn't matter but I didn't find this place too noisy(like some people said). I actually quite liked it. Security was good, breakfast was decent and while the showers and the rooms DID remind me of a prison, it was pretty decent - perfect for me anyway. I just wanted a place to sleep for a night before my plane left the next day. I've been to 2 other places in London and I think I can definitely recommend this place.

We've been travelling around Europe for three months now, and this is the WORST place we stayed at. First of all, I guess the bar is good for raging alcoholics but who wants to sleep in a discotheque??? At night when you went to bed, all you could here was "oonz oonz oonz" until four in the morning. Then your roommate who was partying at this bar comes home and pisses on you. At least that's what happened to us. Some guy we didn't know came in from the bar and pissed on us while we were sleeping!!! It was nasty and the hostel staff did nothing. They said if their maid pissed on us, they could refund our money, but they couldn't do something..not even move us into a better, safer, piss-free room. That tells you how the staff is. Oh and breakfast is nice...unlimited bread which you have to put in dangerous, flaming toasters. We were there for three mornings and we saw at least ten small fires. The showers are free...but challenging since you have to hold down a button the entire time for the freezing cold water to come out. Oh and th changing rooms in the bathroom are conveniently situated next to a window with no blinds or curtains. All in all it's not a pleasant stay. Go somewhere else.

I stayed in the Generator last year. This place is large so it's not difficult to book for a bed/room. The staff is quite helpful and nice, the security is good and the showers are not bad.

However, I think it's not worthwhile to stay here if you're travelling alone, particularly if you want a single room - the YMCA is ever cheaper!! Also the rooms are dim and -yes - like prison cells! Is it because the building itself was a police barrack??? But the decor in the common rooms (lounge, canteen) are spectecular!

Overall, this is a good place to stay in London.

I enjoyed my stay, although it wasn't a good place to meet people. The showers could be cleaner but considering how many people use them it's not so bad at all. Bring a flashlight if you plan on leaving early or getting in late as there is only an over head light in each room. As well I wouldn't recomend staying in london if you have nasal allergies or lung problems, you will probably get sick or have problems as there are heavy amounts of air pollution. I found the bloomsbury neighbourhood very safe, even at 3 in the morning stumbling back from a club.

This place is way over-priced for what it is. Despite the bar, 'event's and hype, it's not that great and definitely not for the budget traveler.

It didn't have laundry facilities so I had to go around the corner to a (rather expensive) laundromat; the rooms are tiny and felt like prison cells; there's no self-catering kitchen so you have to eat out and in one of the most expensive cities ever; staff was pretty unhelpful and non-communicative; whole place reeked of smoke; showers have knobs you have to lean on for water to come out and there were no hooks for your stuff; bathrooms pretty scummy; weirdly remote location; expensive internet kiosks; door codes instead of keys.

Onto the good points: free, enormous Christmas dinner; free movies (though they kinda sucked--"Titanic"? "The Rock"?); opportunities to meet people in common areas (though everyone seemed kinda unfriendly and kept to themselves); close to King's Cross station; quiet neighborhood; can book online; cute Aussie bartender; good food for rather cheap (around 3 pounds for daily specials. They had huge ribs, veg and potatoes one night); friendly American food guy; luggage storage and safe deposit boxes (50 pence each time you open one); towels and sleepsheets provided; funny mix of people(including some families).

Wow...that was long. Hope it was helpful though.
