I went to this place because I heard it was "the place" to stay in London. You know, every city in Europe has one. This would have been a great place if I were travelling in a group, but as a lone traveller, I found it much harder to meet others as in other (smaller) hostels. The bar was cool, but it was so big and loud that I couldn't go and meet people. As for the place, it is plenty decent for a hostel. Some people expect nice bathrooms and stuff, but really, if they need that they should go to a hotel. Also, it is kinda hard to find, so make sure that you get a map that has Russell square on it or you will never find it.

Made the mistake of thinking that big is better. Sure the Generator has a bar, lounge areas..which are nice, but this place is a bed factory...feels like a prison inside those rooms. It is mutton dressed up as lamb, scratch away that neon and things are pretty bad. We moved on th Ashlee House in Kings Cross..not as much space , but freindly, relaxing and clean.

i wanted to give the generator 4 stars but those showers were really bad. but on a better note i was very impressed by this hostel. cool decor and very clean. the rooms were not so nice. but that was partially because my reservation got messed up and i ended up with 11 other people. i usuall share but not with that many. security was excellent and the staff was helpful and polite. the bar was kinda dull. and locals told me the neighborhood is pretty rough but all and all a good experience.

We stayed here in our first week away! i don't know if it was just that we weren't into the hostel scene yet or what, but it sucked the big one! we made on-line reservations, but when we got there we found out that that meant nothing. The two of us got split up into two different dorm rooms, one with 14 people and the other with 10. The bar is full of 14 and 15 hoochies and the place itself is pretty nasty! of all the places i stayed it was the nastiest of nasty! Drunk people show up in your room at 3am and turn on the lights waking everyone up. Then the same thing happens at 5am when someone decided to leave. all in all it was a horrible place!

The Generator really is one of the best hostels in London. They offer a 10% ISIC discount, which makes it very affordable too. Rooms are good with a sink and lockers big enough to fit your backpack in. Security is good too with a punch code needed to get into the dorms. Great/cheap bar and breakfast is included. Only complaint was the showers, which weren't exceptionally clean and had no places to hang up your clothes etc. Hate those taps that only work while you're pressing them in too!! But overall, you can't do much better!

For a "cheap" night stay in London, the Generator is fine. It was not very clean, but it had alot of amenities availble on-site. It was very crowded in July and service was slow.

I agree with Max that The Generator is a great place to stay. I booked it online through their website in about 2 minutes. All the staff were great, and met some great people from America, NZ, Oz etc.

The bar is not to be missed - they've got a giant TV screen where you can watch all the sport that's on, or otherwise the jukebox is free all night! Good beer prices too!

I definitely reccommend The Generator if you want a good time and not to spend too much money!!

We found The Generator excellent value and great fun. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Very safe and secure hostel. The bar is excellent and open late too!! Really good location in central London - met lots of other backpackers - would definitely reccommend this place!

not very clean, too many little kids, less than friendly staff.

But, well located and not too exspensive.
