1. Theres been no electricity in one of the bathroom/shower rooms for at least 3 weeks now. Its impossible to see in there unless London is having a sunny winter day (which is rare), and a rather horrible smell of wee, since the cleaners cant see to clean. In fact, for about two weeks (while on

different floors) the electricity would come and go.

2. Speaking of cleaning, since the hostel staff no longer do it, and outside cleaners are employed, the state of the hostel has gone downhill considerably, with broken glass being left in the hallway for more than one day, etc.

3. I witnessed a rather drunk tourist puking in a sink, which promptly backed up. After reporting it to reception, I was told that since it was night that there was no one available to clean the sink until the next day. The very next night the vomit encrusted sink was still there.

4. Several toilet stall doors cant latch, as the latch doesnt match up properly, so weve resorted to kicking the waste bin against the doors. I found out those doors havent been able to lock since at least MARCH.

5. Several times there have been problems with the hot water, meaning there is none on at least one of the floors, causing the visitors to invade the other floors in search of a hot shower.

6. One bed my husband slept in had no ladder for the top bunk, and the rail on the top bunk had no screws, causing it to move about without warning. Very dangerous.

7. As for the pinball machine, Ive never seen it in either of the chill-out rooms. There are two, one of which is meant to be a non-smoking room, but even the staff for the Orient Espresso Coffee Shop (in which it is located) use it for their smoke breaks, leaving the non-smoker to either suffer through it or not chill out at all. If Sky digital means they get MTV, yep, thats it. If you are lucky. Other than that, its simply terrestrial TV.

8. Barbecue on the roof? Never seen it. Has a hot tub and sauna that tend to go on the blitz and not work for days at a time, or be dirty.

9. Fire hazard. The fire extinguishers we have found have no pin on them, as regulations state they should. Most of them appear to be empty. What a help!

10. We frequently find toilet seats and lids torn off and left on the floor. This includes toilets in Belushis, the bar in the main hostel.

11. The door to one of the tv rooms had the lock and handle completely torn out for at least a week before it was fixed.

Yes, Ive spoken to the staff about this. But do you think anything has been done by management? Well, this week I met the new maintenance man and got him to fix one toilet stall door and the bed. The rest? I'm not counting on it. They do, after all, pay to be called One of the best hostels in Europe. If this is one of the best Id hate to see anything less!! Shame they cant be held up for Truth in Advertising Laws. This place could be really amazing, if only they spent the time and money on it.

As for the facilities, although they are different addresses, travellers staying in any one of the 3 buildings on Borough High Street all have to sign in at 161 and eat breakfast at 161. It's the main hostel facility and they are all 'connected' in that your keys will work for all buildings and you have to trek up and down the street to watch tv, since the tv rooms are in 2 buildings. 161 is also where the hot tub/sauna is located and where we encountered most of the problems. At 121 Borough High Street we stayed for a week in a room and what we encountered there was unbelievable. Everyone in the room was new and there were 7 BAGS WHICH DIDN'T BELONG TO ANYONE! They were covered in a thick layer of dust and had obviously been there for ages. We got the owner of the pub to come and take them away. Obviously the cleaners had been not paying any attention to the fact that they never moved! A few weeks after that I saw a man come in and ask for his bags that he'd left

in March. This was in September. He'd just left them in the room, expecting to come back months later and pick them up! Ok, so stupid travelers are NOT the hostel's fault but I couldn't believe the bags had sat there for so long.

On a side note, we went to Belushi's a few weeks ago. My husband was told he couldn't come in because he had on trainers. They weren't trainers, but there were clearly people with trainers on sitting inside the door. There is no stated dress code at the door and besides, it's a hostel, for crissakes. Like people there AREN'T going to have a pair of trainers!
