This hostel rocked my face off. Everyone that complains about this place has to be a spoiled little rich kid. Backpacking is not for staying at a 5 star hotel every night it is about living from a backpack! Reception was supper cool, bar supper cool (with tons of trashed english people in it), beds were clean and tighty. The showers are not timed, you just have to press a button evert once in a while. Anyway I recomend this place and hope I can return there someday.

Although the faculty was pleasant and helpful enough, the keys hardly ever worked, the beds were dingy, showers mostly cold (esp. on the 1st floor!) and on timers, hottub did not look inviting to me (but the people who used it looked like they were having fun), and bar was just dorky (people on the open mic sounded horrific). I don't mean to sound like a priss or anything. St. C's was doable, yes, but it just made me wonder that there had to be something better out there. The smaller the dorm room, the happier you will be. My friend and I stayed in a 6 person room and did ok, even met some interesting people. Our other friends who were in the 12 person dorm thought that the room smelled like penis and often heard people humping throughout the night, so your best bet for a good time at St. Chris' is to get a private or small dorm room! I will give them credit for fixing the f-ed up key on door that never worked.

St. Christopher's was 2nd worst hostel we stayed at, next to Kabul in Barcelona. These so called "party" hostels are a 50/50 chance, I've come to find out. The best ones were Alessandro in Rome and Flying Pig in Amsterdam.

Stayed at the village the first week of march, slept in a 12 bed dorm (just above the street). Yes, there's traffic noise (24*7), yes the breakfast is borring and the hostel probably is a bit commercial, BUT you get a basic, cheap, secure acommodation and you're close to central London with busses and subway just down the road - all in all I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Like the most of you, I did a lot of research and looked at reviews of backpackers to stay at while in london, and all i can say is my expectations were shotdown bigtime!, this place is an absolute dive!!! Basically from the beginning the staff werent helpful at all, then i was in a dorm room with like 12 other people of whome seemed alright to start with but in the end turned out to be a bunch of typical aussie yobbo's (im aussie too by the way) i was woken at about 2am with a beer fight going on in the dorm room where they saturated matresses with beer and then started a fight between themselves,,,yeah,,,real fun! anyway apart from that, the toilets were filthy, the sorta thing youd never want to sit your butt cheeks on even if you were busting!, the beds are shit, matresses are even worse!, good luck with storing anything in the lockers as they are tiny, the pillows are about as soft as a wooden plank, the sheets and blankets were once probably white in colour but now resemble a babyshit green colour, DONT WASTE YOUR TIME PEOPLE,,,there are plenty of bed n breakfasts around in london for about 20 pounds a night,,,,,,backpackers suck in general unless you are a yobbo!

The best bit,,,,,,,was leaving the next morning and then cancelling my further bookings there!

Anyway,,,,goodluck! dont let a place like this ruin your holiday.

I think the reviews below describe perfectly the hostel itself, in which I also had a very good stay last week with two of my friends.

I have to say I love the area of Southwark: it's right next to the City of London, the tower bridge, the tower of London. And along the Thames, 5 minutes from the hostel are very old dungeon-like buildings, pubs probably older than America, and the Borough Market, with lots of good food. A few steps further are the Tate modern, and the London Eye.

Also, when I stayed, Bridget Jones's Diary 2 was being shot 100 yards from the hostel, I saw Renee...

All in all, Southwark is THE place to go at the moment. A mix of old and new, enduring a great revival at the moment.

Fantastic hostel, great bar and chill-out room really switched on staff who know what a backpacker wants.

A bit noisy at night with the DJ playing but it was New year. Lots of different nationalities especially americans who were all having a good time. Hi to Abbey and phillipa 2 really cool chicks.

I loved this hostel because....

1)The chillout room - it's a great meeting place if you want to catch up with other travellers and meet up with your friends or just chill. I was sick for a couple of days and it was nice to have somewhere to hang out apart from the room and the bar. Bean bags, sofas, HUGE screen for TV, PSX2, what more could you want?

2)Spa and Sauna - great to relax in after walking around all day or when you're waiting for your laundry.

3)Just an all-round great atmosphere.

Things I didn't like:

1)There's not many bars or clubs around that area.

2)Timer showers always suck!

3)Staff can be a bit arrogant and jaded...but this doesn't really matter because you're not really there to hang out with them anyway!

All in all, I think if you're looking for fun and wanting to meet other people, this is a great hostel. If you feel like you just want to chill and be introverted and have your own 'space' then I wouldn't come here.

The village hostel rocks. can look a bit commercial on first impressions but once you've stayed there a day you cant but love the place, staff and bar. I don't think there was a question or issue I had that the staff on the desk couldn't or wouldn't deal with. They were just out of this world. Will definatelly recommend. Thanks for everything

Just got back from a Europe trip and stayed 5 nights in this place. Each night there was something on in the bar you get a discount if you are backpacker !!!!

They had just finished their lounge AWESOME the biggest large screen I have ever seen. Current and old DVD are shown.Location was great for central London.Breakfast was very basic but Free. Good staff who were backpackers and had loads of information for me. I will return.
