This hostel has a great location - next to Place Monge metro, near the Pantheon and walking distance to Notre Dame etc. The street, Rue Mouffetard is great, lots of creperies, bars and restraunts, and theres a supermarket next door, and fruit and fish markets every morning. Its makes a great base for exploring Paris. Unfortunately, the hostel wasn't as great as its surroundings. We had no curtains on our windows which meant anyone and everyone could, and did look in. The room itself wasn't too bad, but not the cleanest i've experienced and the toilets are disgusting. I could've put up with all of that if it hadn't have been for the noise. The four nights i stayed there i had about 8 hours sleep in total, which doesn't make for good sightseeing in the morning! The 2am curfew is great for partying, but not for getting to sleep. The noise didn't generally stop until 5am. Only the thought of carrying our rucksacks across Paris stopped us from moving.

Stayed at this hostel last summer for 1 night. I got my room at last minute so I had to share the 1 bed room with this American guy but I made him sleep on the floor, hehe. Our room was very small but clean, it's windows opened up to the street and the locks on the door seemed a bit dodgy. The bar/reception was filled with American students very loud and rude. Theres a 2am curfew that is strictly imposed but there are many very lively cafés and bars a few seconds away from the hostel. The staff wasn't very friendly but then again there's the infamous French charm for you. But like I mentioned considering I got this last minute it was an alright hostel overall and I'll probably stay there again.

The room I stayed in was up a very narrow, steep, rickety, spiral staircase with two bunk beds (sleeps four obviously). It was comfortable and had a small sink, but not as quiet as some would probably prefer considering that there is a bar downstairs in the lobby. The Showers arent the best and you can be almost guaranteed that if you bring clothes in with you that they are getting soaked by the time you finish. The crowd in the very small lobby/bar seemed to want to stay there and drink rather than see/explore Paris (hinting that it got/gets crowded). Whatever though, I had my own agenda. The price was about $20 a night and that was what all the hostels were charging at the time (Early January 2002). The location is decent, around a bunch of shops and not too far from the metro. The staff are a bunch of tools but it is Paris and it should be expected. All in all I would stay there again. I felt safe in the area and safe in the hostel itself even though I fell at least a flight down the stairs in my drunken stupor! =)

I liked Young and Happy, but with each hostel I've been to since my stay at the Y&H in early May I grow less and less fond of it. The shower was pretty nasty (at least the one near room 2 up the winding stairs... I don't know about the others). A door allows for privacy, but the shower stall itself has no door which makes for rather chilly showers and gets clothes and towels all damp. The double room in which I stayed had charm... I liked having a table and sink in the room, but the blankets had some nasty stains and the bed consisted of little more than a mattress. The lock-out between 11 and 5 was both good and bad. I think it forced me to see more of Paris (good) but sometimes I felt exhausted and just wanted to sit down in my room and couldn't (bad). I did, however, love the location of this hostel. I was able to walk to Notre Dame in about 10 minutes. Also - rue Mouffetard has a great market during the daytime. Walking from the hostel in any direction was a fun adventure. The Place Monge subway stop was 2 minutes away. A grocery store neighbours the hostel, and there are a number of crepe and panini stands which allow for cheap eats. Furthermore, even though the kitchen didn't amount to much, the fact that there was one helped us save money on food (and as I've realized since my visit to Y&H - a bad kitchen is better than no kitchen).

This has been my first hostalling experience, so what I write should be taken with a grain of salt.

I arranged the place only a few days before my arrival, which was in mid February. I had to contact the guys several times, and particularly one of the people I have talked to was a bit less than polite. If you carry on your booking well in advance, everything should run smoothly.

The hostel is in a very lively neighbourhood. However, you might want to take the metro (which is only a three minute walk) for other attractions like Eiffel, Montmartre and Arc de Triomphe. My advice would be to walk the streets as it is very pleasant in Paris and even Eiffel is around 45min walk.

Do not expect much in terms of bar (three tables and several stools), or kitchen. The breakfast is good for what you pay for. The building seems to be coming apart but it is not, and it is reasonably clean. However, the bed mattresses and blankets are pretty old. Nevertheless, they do the job.

The people in the hostel were friendly, and the hostel was safe; however it is advisable to leave your valuables at the hostel's safe (just ask the guy at the reception).

One last thing, I wasn't particularly picky about it but a rather experienced fellow backpacker found the shower rather chilly. Might depend on personal taste, I reckon.

Overall, the hostel was OK, although people claimed it is a bit expensive for its services. I'll try my luck somewhere else when I come back to Paris, but still, this is a very reasonable place to stay.

Its a dive. this place was one of the most bunk hostels I stayed at in all of Europe. Other than location its bearable, but not great. The thing is more often than not you'll be hard pressed to find any open hostels in Paris unless you book ahead. Its bar consists of three tables, and the common room is rather small also. Oh yeah and of course you also have to put up with the 11am-5pm lockout, If your like me, I can't stand the lockout Bizness

I stayed here during the off season and was in a 3 bed dorm that had a tiny toilet and a sink. Note that most rooms require you to walk up several tiny, twisting flights of stairs. The rooms were clean and cheerful, but you must rent sheets and there is only one blanket per bed. The breakfast was good, consisting of a half bagette and jam, hotchocolate or coffee, and orange juice. They apparently have a bar there and a kitchen, but I checked out neither as I was only in overnight. I didn't find it too noisey to sleep and everyone was friendly.

The location really is as good as it gets. The road the hostel is on is a long market road that sells wonderful goodies.

Overall, I plan to stay here again when I return to Paris and, although this hostel is not a medieval castle or a 5 star hotel, it is safe, clean, and comfortable, and a good deal for Paris.
