I love Munich. This is the third time I've been here and each time it gets better. I've only been in the winter before, and have always admired the architecture and evident quality of life here. Today the sun came out and I saw the city with it's coat off .... what a treat.

Culture aplenty, history too and most importantly of all the beergardens.

Munich is like the cars from these parts, a hard working yet innovative engine, sleek lines and a glossy coat.

The Euro Youth Hostel continues in this vein. Antique wooden stairways, chandeliers and marble in the common room, I don't know where they get the money from... Or maybe I do. Euro 18 for a dorm bed without breakfast is a bit steep, but then you won't find anything cheaper in the city and it would be a crying shame not to come here.

The Euro Youth Hotel is conveniently located near the train station and a short walk to the old town center and shops. Its 24 reception and numerous beds mean that reservations for a dorm bed are not necessary, at least if you're not travelling in summer or during Oktoberfest. However, the dorms are clearly second class: huge with 26 beds to a room; on the ground level with reception, bar, and lounge; and the available shower facilities were in the basement. The smokey bar is filled with older men and there is no complimentary breakfast. Nothing abhorrent, but its flaws would be more forgivable if it wasn't so expensive.

I've just read the previous entry from the anonymous Canadian and simply can't believe it. If you don't feel comfortable getting changed in front of other people then don't stay in a dormitory, and if you can't have fun and meet people in the bar there then you're a loser mate.

The Euro Youth Hostel is a quality place, the staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms clean and comfortable.

If you're worried about security then check out the video surveillance on display behind the 24 hr manned reception.

Really I had a great time there, so please don't be put off by miserable sad acts who would be better off staying at home. You'd be missing out !

Terrible Hostel in a Beautiful City, April 1, 2003

I stayed in the Euro Youth hostel in March 2003. I enjoyed Munich but that was in spite of the hostel not because of it. You cannot have high expectations when you stay in a hostel, but this was the worst hostel I stayed at during my trip in Europe.

I stayed in a dorm room which was huge. The dorms are very cramped. You are tightly surrounded by people on all sides. The dorms are co-ed which makes dressing difficult. It was the biggest dorm I have ever stayed in. It felt like a prisoner of war camp dorm.

The showers are located downstairs from the dorm and are a fair walk. There are only three showers. The men's room area near the urinals often was covered in water (I hope it was water) and the whole men's room in general was not clean.

The hostel is expensive and you get little for what you pay.

Lockers are not included in the price. Small lockers cost 1 Euro a day.

There is no security at the hostel and no lock of any kind on the door of the dorm. You do not need to show any ID at the front door and there is no key or passcard. That is convenient but it also means that anyone could walk in off the street and into a dorm room.

Breakfast is not included and costs 4.90 Euro. It is a buffet of bread, meat, cheese, corn flakes, juice, and coffee. That's sounds good but everything is of the poorest quality. Many people skipped the breakfast because they feel it is poor for what you pay. I had the breakfast two out of four days and felt it was okay but nothing to wake up for.

I found the staff unpleasant and unhelpful. They did not seem to enjoy working at the hostel.

The hostel bar (and the hostel in general) is very noisy and smoky. That may sound like a silly comment but this bar is unlike the bars at other hostels. Most hostel bars have happy, pleasant environments that are good for meeting people. This bar felt like it belonged on skid row.

There is overpriced internet access at the hostel. Luckily an "Easy Internet Cafe" which is huge and cheap is located very near the hostel across from the train station.

The one good thing about the hostel is it's location. It is in a seedy area but it is right near the train station and very close to the town centre.

If this review sounds negative that it because I want to convince you not to stay at this hostel. If you do decide to stay at the hostel make sure not to stay in the dorm.

Having read the other reviews of this place, I feel like I won the lottery. I asked for a dorm bed, and paid the dorm rate, but ended up in a room with three beds (on which either no other, or one other, was occupied for my 6 night stay). It was clean and friendly, although all the smoke around the downstairs bar was extremely off putting.

The toilets were fine, although the showers were the hand held type, which was a little unfortunate. Cleaning up the down stairs laundary wouldn´t be a bad idea, because it was in a very ordinary state when I was there.

Dingy & Smoky, Convenient Location, January 3, 2003

Judging from other reviews, I was fortunate to stay in a triple room! The room itself was just fine - a little on the darker side and a bit dingy, but the real problem was that the whole place was so smoky. Their building must not be properly ventilated because all the hallways and downstairs area reek. Sometimes it even creeps into the rooms. This is all despite the fact that the entire place, except for the downstairs bar area is "no smoking".

The showers can be a little below most people's standards of cleanliness, but otherwise I had few qualms with the place. It is right next to the main train station and about a 10 minute walk to the Marienplatz/town center.

Prices were better than what was quoted on this page, but still a bit high.

hello everybody,

I just left Munich last week and I still miss it!! a great city, we just had one party after the other!! the bar is nice to start the evening before you head towards "Schwabing" or check clubs at the "Kunstpark Ost" (and also to have a last drink before goin to bed). though I was bothering the staff with thousands of questions they answered all of them with a smile.....

great city, great hostel, GREAT FUN!!!!

Great bar great beer, friendly english speaking staff. The dorms are a great way of meeting people.

The owners seem to pay attention to cleanliness which makes a pleasant change.

Much better than the impersonal 4you on the other side of the station where I spent my first night in Munich with about 200 schoolkids.

Close to the sights and the action........check out the CRAWL pub tour while in Munich.

I stayed in two types of rooms when I was there, one night in a three person room, and the other night in the notorious dorm. For the room I give four stars, it was nice, had a tv, and had it's own shower and bathroom. On the other hand, the dorm gets one maybe two stars. They cram fourty people in wall to wall bunk beds. The people on the top bunks have nowhere to put their luggage, so have to sleep with it at there feet, which is incredibly uncomfortable. There isn't ever a shelf on the top bunk where you can put an alarm clock or anything. It gets so hot in the dorm at night that you can hardly sleep, and the bar next door plays ridiculously loud music until late into the night that can be heard perfectly in the dorm. The bathrooms are nowhere close to the room and the showers are bad.

I have heard that the private trooms are considerably better, I can only tell you what is what like in the dorms. They were huge rooms I think with 16 beds each. The upper bunks are really high, really close to the ceiling. These rooms were dark, but I thought that the beds were comfortable at least. It had a real impersonal feel to it, everyone talking really low, afraid to disturb anyone else. The staff was friendly enough, and it seemed to be a really social place, if you came with friends. The bar raged all night. I was afraid I might not be able to sleep, but due to my exhaustaion, I found it to be no problem, I passed right out every night. The bathrooms though, were scary, some of the worst in all my travels through Europe. My main complaint was with the showers. There are the dorm bathrooms downstairs, the ones that have the showers, and for all of us girls, there were only two showers. One of which had no door, no lock, which made everyone wait for the "working" shower. Talk about drainage problems, this one would get clogged as soon as the water was turned on, hair and soap scum would float all around, get in your toes. I had to uncomfortably stand along the rim of the shower, I was so grossed out. Least the water was hot. At least it was conveniently near the train station.
