This is a very unique hostel. It almost feels like your staying at home and it's easy to quickly meet friends. If privacy is a priority however you may want to stay away.

I loved to lounge in the hammocks out back and the price was unbeatable. People complain about the location however I got off at the Kelenfoldi train station (I think it was a couple of stations before the main Keleti pu) and it was only a 10 minute walk away.

Directions from kelenfoldi (so people will stop complaining about it being hard to find): From the train station head north to Bartock Bela, turn right on this street. Turn left at railway bridge (Karolina St I think). Then make your way back along the other side of the tracks (that's a left, the street is called Hamzabegi) and then it's the third street on your right (it's the house painted strange colours).

This is my idea of a perfect hostel. I really could have stayed there for months, like many of the guests at the time were doing. Awesome backyard with hammocks and cool wood decks. Bright and fun rooms. Great prices, my girlfriend and I had a private room for I think 10 euro a night. I decided after staying here that I someday want to open several youth hostels like this one----stay here

I went there in May 2002 without knowing anything about that place. Pics i found on internet pushed me to choose Backpackers Guesthouse, nothing more. First impressions were nice, friendly welcome and loud colors on the walls.... nice place surrounded by incenses smell. The owners and workers are REAL backpackers (by the way look the pictures of their trips!!!) and when they furnished hostel they knew perfectly what's usefull and what useless, so you'll never miss smth important. They were nice and always ready to give me advices to save money in the city and to reach easily other locations. Trust me, it's a great hostel!!!

This place might be as awesome as everyone says, if you actually get to stay there. I called a couple of days before my arrival and made a reservation. Guy on the phone told me that it would be ok for us to arrive late in the evening and that there'd definately be place for us to sleep, even if in separate dorms. But when we finally got there, after taking a bus from the station since the hostel isn't anywhere nearby, it appeared that it was all full and that no one supposedly ever took our reservation! Bullshit... I found the staff a bit two-faced and they didn't seem sorry at all about "losing" our reservation. If this place really is as great as I've heard it is, they shouldn't have to lower themselves to do double-booking. The good thing about not getting to stay there was getting to stay in a hostel down the street (where pretty much everyone had had a reservation to Backpackers but not fit in, so this isn't just me), which turned out to be great fun...

I stayed here Xmas '01. Atilla put on a free dinner for everyone. Great atmosphere.

We arrived in Budapest at 10pm and called the hostel. We were given directions on what tram to catch and how to get to the hostel. I have no sense of direction but found it easily.

I found the hostel to be very clean, except for the long term guests. But hostel long term guests are always dirty. They didn't wash their dishes, smoked in the kitchen etc. I didn't complain so can't blame Atilla.

Our room was cleaned every day and a lot of space in the big room.

Highly recommend it.

Of course, like everyone else, we had problems finding this hostel. But once there, it was OK. We had booked a room for four people, but we were split up at first - and I'm sorry to say, the front desk staff weren't so friendly. We had to wait 30 minutes while the front desk girl had a social conversation before checking in.

While the rooms are themed - kinda neat - the beds were pretty uncomfortable and the pillow cases had never been cleaned; they were shiny with oil...

The kitchen facilities are nice, the outdoor area very cozy, but we also (as another reviewer mentioned) had problems with the heat. It was Easter weekend, cold, and they said they would turn on the heat, but when they realized they couldn't (why I don't know), they brought us an extra blanket.

This is an ok place if you want to party with other backpackers, but not the best if you are interested in seeing Budapest.

You'll want to take transport to get here, but it's cheap. I found the place to be clean, no bed bugs, there was hot water (though one shower cannot be nearly enough if the place is filled). There is free internet, which is definately a plus, so consider yourself saving some money there. Also, you can pay in Euros (10, I think, for a dorm bed).

I had heard so many good things about this hostel, but it turned out to be a big disapointment!

Well, the hostel looks nice and I simply love the tacky inventory, but the staff is ignorant and the bathrooms were very, very dirty. And the dorm I stayed in was freezing cold! When I talked to the staff they said that the guy working night used to turn of the heat (?) but they couldn´t explain why. Even though they promised to turn on the heat, nothing happened. Uncomfy beds and water that smelled strange made it even worse!!

Though, there were loads of interesting things to read on the bathroom walls (writing former guests left behind), and that´s about the only reason to why you should go here.

the 5 star rating ive given this place is not easily come by. after staying in nearly 40 hostels in my travels, backpack guesthouse was undoubtedly my favourite...although a little hard to find (i most definately got lost!) this was duly compensated by the friendly faces which greeted me and the homely atmosphere which it oozes! i would highly recommend this hostel, as its facilities are also outstanding..kitchen, hammocks, lotsa movies and really helpful staff, oh and the caving is also awesome...stay at this place!!! :)

I was just feeling nostalgic for my backpacking days and came across this site and absolutely HAD to review this hostel. I arrived after getting more than a little bit lost, late at night, by myself, but once I came in the door I immediately had friends that I knew that I wouldn't forget. Long cold December evenings of watching movies and drinking slivovice, harrassing the staff with endless questions, creating a huge tent city in our dorm room, getting my hair cut in the bathroom, chillin' with Atilla and hearing some crazy travel adventures, playing cards with some long time ex-pats who gather in the kitchen each Sunday evening and explaining the wonder of the new Canadian beer commercials to them, enjoying Christmas pudding baked by a long term guest/esl teacher.... I could go on. Stay at this hostel, it is a home away from home. You will adore it. Trust me.
