I stayed here over a week (more due to economics, but even so), and had a great time, overall. The hostel is missing a few minor amenities if you want to get picky, but it's upkeep is fantastic, the facilities work fine, the staff is superfriendly and knowledgeable, and it's in a decent area of town. They've got a huge video library, and being situated in an actual house, you feel like you're back to your undergrad days. Although the weather was too cold for it, the backyard has a nice little oriental-style gazebo for chilling, and there's also internet access. If you visit this place, chances are you'll stay longer than a few days.

The place is very friendly and the staff have good advice but the Backpack Guesthouse is way way away from the station. There are no real places to meet people either. On the other hand there is a good store close by and the atmosphere is great. I enjoied my stay here.

I heartily agree with all the other reviewers. If you visit this place and don't fall in love with it, there's something wrong with and you should give up backpacking. The people first and foremost were what made this hostel amazing. Everyone is relaxed, friendly, nice and fun to hang out with. We arrived in the morning and an hour later went out to the baths with a big group of people from the hostel. And that was pretty much the story for the rest of my stay... you just meet so many cool people, there's so much to do. There's cheap Chinese food 2 minutes away. There's a fridge full of cheap, cold beer. There's 250 movies for you to chill and watch after a hard day of sightseeing. There's.. well, you get the idea. The best hostel I have every stayed in. Stay a week, and you get a free T-shirt.. and you'd be amazed at how many people get the T-shirt.And of course, BOOK AHEAD. It will fill up in the summer. If you show up without a reservation, you are probably going to be out of luck; I saw several people turned away while I was there. 5 stars all the way.

I´m not sure whether that means anything to you, but for me it does. There simply is not much to fault in this place. The rooms are now 1800Ft upwards (cheap for Budapest), and each of them has it´s own unique personality. I was in the Bob Marley Room for my stay (the largest room, complete with enormous Bob Painting ... imagine seeing his face as you wake from your drunken slumber!), which held a great mixture of Ozzies, Italians, Finns, Brits (like me), Canadians, Japanese etc etc. It was such a good place to meet a hugely divers range of people. This makes a good hostel for me. There were also quite a few people on their second or third visits ... not many places you can say that about. You can then add the obligatory internet access, kitchen, laundry service, showers, toilets etc ... the gazebo, balcony and tv room all serve as common areas. They are great places to chill out and plan the next Budapest sortie! While I was there, Atilla was away on another action adventure, while Bori (she´s fantastic) and George were manning the ship at home. The staff here go out of their way (a lot) to make you feel welcome, and help you get the most out of the city. Things like calling taxis, booking restaurants, helping with visas .... plenty of things above and beyond the call of duty. Nando even set his alarm for ridiculous-o´clock so that I didn´t miss my train. You can´t pay money for that.I asked the people there what we would change about the hostel, and to be honest, there wasn´t much. Having been there as the rains started, we were confined to camp for a few evening, and we could have done with a little extra space. Still, they can´t control the weather! Only other minor negative is the need to sit inside the hostel late at night to ensure neighbourly happiness ... once again, something beyond their control.I would hate to say this is the best hostel I´ve stayed because those sort of judgements often depend on circumstances and moods. Still, if I was arrested by the Thought Police, this would be one of the first names I blurted out under duress.Oh, and when you go, give Bori a big kiss for me ;)

I stayed here with 4 friends over 5 years ago and it has been imprinted on my mind ever since. I agree with the need to book though, we did and maybe cos we were a large group there was no space on the day we arrived, so we ended up in a cell block the other side of the city which had recently been fumigated. Anyway, we got into BPGH the next day much to our delight and extended our 3 day stay to a week and even then my friends had to drag me kicking and screaming into the Czech Rep as I had loved being in the guest house so much.

i also have travelled quite extensively and nowhere has a hostel been able to duplicate the sense of family and friendship as at the backpack. i just keep going back. it's a place where you'd rather stay in and chill out than see the absolutely gorgeous city of budapest (which you should) but some days you just need to hang out. and the backpack is perfect for that. plus the fact that everyone knows your name and barry writes like crazy about all the people that come in and out. you can even sleep outside in the gazebo! try it. it's wonderful

i have traveled more in europe than anyone else i know, from ireland to romania, norway to belarus, andorra to estonia. the backpackers guesthouse is an old favorite hostel of mine: a friendly staff, all the free movies you could ask for, kitchen facilities, internet, washer/dryers, cheap day-tour arrangements, and most importantly, an amazing ambiance of backpackers from around the world, meeting, trading travel stories, writing in their journals, playing chess, cooking together, partying... the outside is decorated with crazy paintings and each dorm-style room has a theme (eg: bob marley room, animal room, underwater room, etc.). they have a wall with the names of people who have returned dozens of times. i have gone out of my way to visit the hostel whenever i've been within a two country radius of budapest, a terrific city as well. if you are a budget backpacker and you don't stay at the backpackers guesthouse, you are missing out! call ahead as it tends to fill up during peak season. but if it's full, you can always ask barry if you can sleep in the backyard gazebo under the stars.
