Nice, but a little noisy in some dorms because of the surroundings pubs.Showers: 4. Good.Kitchen: 3.5. Nice, but too little.Common rooms: 3.5. Only TV room. Smoking allowed :(Staff: 4. Very helpful.Facilities: 3. Breakfast, linen, laundry.Overall: 3.75. Much better than Galway hostel (place in where a lot of people sleep because its very near station).

Actually 3 1/2 stars. If the shower had worked properly, I'd give it 4. This was a nice hostel, very safe and lots of people of a variety of ages. There are personal key cards to get into the housing area and the individual rooms, but no individual lockers to store things, which meant just leaving your things in your room. No curfew and in the very centre of the city, though what's not because Galway is rather small. I stayed here in early November and unfortunately got very, very sick with fevers, sore throat, lethargy, (turned out to be mono :( )etc. so it was nice that there was no lock-out so I could sleep all day. Duvets were warm and adequate, the room itself got a bit stuffy with 6 people and our shower flooded whenever anyone used it, so that was kind of a pain (but good water pressure). Kitchen facilities are nice, though breakfast is just toast and tea/coffee. Desk receptionists were all helpful and moderately friendly. Ask for a room not facing the street as it was very noisy when the pubs let out. The TV/common room is the only place you're able to smoke, so for those non-smokers, not a very comfortable spot to hang out in. Also, I recommend the Cliffs of Moher/Connemara bus tours! Well worth the money as you see a lot of the countryside of the traditional "wild Ireland" and its very conveinant if you don't have a car... the hostel can give you information about them or book them for you.

My sister and I have just left after the most wonderful week in the centre of Galway. The hostel is really clean and very safe. The staff gave us great advice and guide books to use while staying there which saved us time and money during our trip. Ask for discounts as there are many that you may be entitled to without knowing. This place is a home away from home.

I found Barnacles in Galway the best hostel during my 1 month trip around Ireland. The beds were exceptionally comfy, always had hot water and they even had a hairdryer!! The reception staff help organise my trip not only through and around Galway but all around Ireland. Being a first time traveller, this was a great relief. It is also smack bang in the center of town with loads of pubs, clubs and restuarants right around, so I never had to worry anout walking home by myself or spending extra money on cabs. Thanks for everything - Keep up the good work!!

The best way to describe this hostel is that it is clean, comfortable and affordable. You also get free breakfast which is an added bonus. The rooms all have bathrooms which is good. I really liked the athmosphere in this hostel and it has a great location.

I stayed in Barnacles in May with three of my friends and we all loved it. It is right in the centre of everything. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The rooms were really cosy and we had our own bathroom and shower facilities. Definitely one of the best hostels I have stayed in. We will definitely go back!

Just about the only thing this hostel has going for it is it's location. The showers didn't work in our room, so we had to go downstairs every morning to get a key to someone else's room (who had just checked out) and use their shower. We didn't get the room we requested and were therefore stuck in a 12 person room, equipted with its own scary middle aged man who sat there just watching us. In all honestly, it may be a great place to stay (it was full when we stayed there); it just wasn't great when I was there.
