I couldn't have rolled into a better find than this hostel - came for two days and can't remember how long I did stay. If no one is about when you arrive, you just make yourself comfortable in the sitting room and stare out the window at the rain. The kitchen has an interesting collection of tools; the breakfast with the freshly made bread, and I remember some very good honey (and Cowboy Junkies on the stereo), makes for a nice little start to the day. Fine walking and cycling. Diamond Mountain, the lump at your back in the National Park is also the name of a Sharon Shannon (button accordion) CD session albumn, which they are often playing in one of the pubs (the one with the attached shop). Also, a butcher's. Having to smoke outside was no hassle apart from getting midged, it was a rather wet May.

The location is great and the staff very friendly. Very nice living room with an open fire and big kitchen. It enabled us to meet many other travellers from various horizons. The rooms are big and comfortable. Don't miss the breakfast ! Also if you like the countryside, don't miss Doolin: there are many pubs and beautiful cliffs.

I had been trekking for a day and was really tired and weary. The Old Monastery Hostel was the very right place for me, hot showers, friendly staff, candles, warm fireplaces, classical music and other quests who were all as relaxed and good-mooded as i was. The freshly baked bread on the breakfast was also a nice surprise. Because I don't smoke the lacking smoking room was no problem for me, I found that place as a bit of heaven. I was told that there is also a ghost in that old house, but it disturbs only men and leaves women and children peace ;)

Highly reccomened though - even if the Stephen can't handle real women.

The Old Monastery Hostel is a great place to stay. They offer a nice and cosy living-room with an open turf fire (the room is owned by a cat and an old dog ;)), a good breakfast and you should try the dinner-buffet, they are provoding sometimes (just ask). Quite clean and some good beds are provided (not all of them ;)). The staff is very nice and helpfull and there is a lot to explore in Letterfrack and the surrounding landscape.

Does not get five stars cause of the lack of a smoking room (you have to smoke outside - which is no fun in january - of course a point for non-smokers to go there).

I lived in Galway for 3 years. I would always "escape" to either the Old Monastery hostel for rest and relaxation. Or the other way, to Clare, to Doolin to the Aille River Hostel.

Both are excellant.

This is a hostel that anyone hostelling in Ireland must visit. The food is wonderful and the staff are great!. Relax in comfortable old chairs in front of an ever burning fire. The hostel is just a 3 minute walk from the nearest (3) pubs and shops, and is on the edge of a National Park. Just go out the back of the hostel to get into the park.
