First off, I heard really good things about this place. I dont think they were too misleading. The rooms were just that, rooms. Someone said there were "bedbugs" but I didnt see any or have any effects of them. The bathrooms were kind of grungy. The floor would have a big pool in it after a few showers, so if you didnt get there first, you would walk in that cold water. THe atmosphere was great though. If for that reason alone I would go again. The guys that run it know the town well enough, so they can take you around the bars or clubs.

I stayed here in July 2003. Basically a very bad experience - 110 steps up, and 100 down if you wanted to smoke ( which was on a tiny balcony overlooking a roof and piles of rubbish ). The bed was ridiculous - As soon as I lay down I'd disappear into the mattress it was so lumpy and knackered. There was NO HOT WATER on any of the 3 nights I stayed there, and on the last morning there was no water at all on my floor! Yes, you can go downstairs but then it gets really busy and you can't get a shower at all. It's dirty throughout, and I heard rumours of bedbugs although avoided them myself. The staff are surly and sarcastic. The only good things are the location which is superbly convenient and the free internet ( although you'll have to battle to get on to it). All in all - DO NOT STAY HERE - YOU'LL REGRET IT.

This place gives hostels a bad name. The bedrooms were absolutely filthy, the floor had about an inch of muck and filth on it. This is as nothing compared to the showers though. The whole bathroom ends up flooded, the showers are dirty and the smell is revolting. The breakfast is not worth touching: a prepackaged croissant, chocolate chip muffin and a carton of pear juice: go to a bakery unless the budget is really pushed like mine! You're only allowed to smoke on the balcony from where you have a great view of all the scurrying rats: of which there are much and many! Plus points: the free internet is great; the common area has nice couches to crash on and is a great place to meet people. Overall, a poor hostel: avoid it if you can, it's not a pleasant residential experience!

Try other places before this one. The bathroom facilities are in adaquate. There are too many restrictions. It could also have been cleaner.

I satyed at MJ Place for 4 nights this past summer and I had a really great time. A number of people have mentioned the hot water problem but I can guarantee you that it was only on the 4th floor that there was no hot water. I stayed on teh 4th floor but took showers every morning on the 3rd floor where there was always hot water.

The location is great as MJ is only a short walk from the train/subway station and walkable to all the major sights....although it is a fairly long walk. The room I stayed in was clean as were the showers.

The free internet and free movies is great, but the free breakfast really is pretty lousy and really not worth anything.....I forget what type of juice box they gave us every morning but it was absolutely disgusting and the "muffin" was like a rock and I ended up just throwing mine out.

The kitchen is WONDERFUL and makes Rome much more affordable by allowing you to make your own food.

One of the biggest negitives is that the common area closes at 11pm, so you must either leave and go somewhere else or goto bed.....however, there is never a shortage of people who want to go out past 11, so this is not a huge problem.

another annoying thing is that they give you a paper "key" that is basically a receipt that you need if you want to enter the building past 11:00.....if you loose this, which is very easy, they give you the first degree to give you enterence....however, I guess this is also a good thing as it ensures your safety....

Overall I would definitely stay at MJs again....it's very sociable place to stay and the staff is absoluely wonderful.

I stayed here for 3 nights, in December 2002. While the rooms were not pristine, they were decent. Bedrooms were nice, slightly old matresses, but clean sheets, and not too cramped. I did not see any bedbugs, nor heard complains of any whilst i was there. Showers were ok, they were fairly clean when I was there. The staff is VERY friendly and willing to help anyway they can. The kitchen was quite nice, filled with utensils, plates, pans, pots, etc. The common room was warm and a great place to meet people. They have free internet and movies. There seemed to be a very nice crowd when I was there, euro-backpackers types (no annoying schoolgroups or stupid frat boys). So, overall I enjoyed my stay. The facilities are not the best, but the atmosphere is great.

If I could give this place negative stars I would...but we can´t do that.

This was BY FAR the most disgusting hostel we stayed at on our 3 month trip of Europe. It is one of those places that when you get home you tell your friends and family, "I can´t believe I actually stayed there." The staff wouldn´t let us see the rooms before we booked a night which should have set off warning signals...but the front reception is friendly and looked appealing so we gave it a go. Upstairs where the dorms and rooms are is a different story. Cold showers, bed bugs, no shower curtains, disgusting toilet facilities. Do not get sucked in by their brochure offering free breakfast, laundry, and internet...the laundry is not free...you have to walk 2 blocks to a lavanderia where you get a very minute reduction in price. The internet is free but impossible to get on because it is so busy. And the free breakfast...let´s just say that there is a reason that it is free. If you decide to stay there, do so at your own risk.

Two words: bed bugs. While the hostel has good facilities, such as the kitchen and free internet, their beds have bugs. I know people who got bitten. I never saw the bugs, but I think I got them in my backpack after I stayed at this hostel because I got bitten after I left and had to wash all my clothes and bags to get rid of them. Bottomline: good facilities, friendly staff, but until they fix the bug problem, I would only recommend you stay here as a last resort.

I recently stayed at M&J Place hostel, in Rome and from day one I had the time of my life. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the overall facilities and service provided for the money I pay has left me with a very positive impression and memorable stay in Rome. I would definitely recommend to other travellers that if you go to Rome you must stay at M&J Place hostel, ROMA!!!

I just stayed at M&J , it was definetely one of the best places I stayed. Reception on 1st floor very warm and nice. The guy at reception make you feel confortable and home stay from first moment. Large kitchen open until 11 at night plus balcony and big tv room. Also Internet is Free. Rooms are nice with 6 beds only no bunk and clean with nice white and blue walls. The bath are cleaned every 2 hrs in the afternoon. Look good to me. A night all together out to a pub near by the hostel to continue the party. I made many new friends and with this i like to thank you the Hostel that make my stay in Rome unforgettable . I stayed there 4 days.
