Most of the factual information in the 1980 review is correct but we would like to include some slightly more up to date information.

We went in the end of March, which was still cold in Venice. But no heating was provided so we slept with long pants and shirts and 4 blankets.

The place has a friendly dog but as a result, the whole place smelled of that dog.

You have to pay for showers - 1 euro for 5 minutes, in a grungy dirty shower which smelt of urine. The toilets also ran out of toilet paper.

Just note that there is a 2 night minimum stay, there is no lockout and no curfew. There are also no kitchen facilities except for a microwave (so no fridge for the breakfast cereal milk).

One consolation was that it was just off the Strada Nova with lots of shops and stalls and close to the rail and bus station. Archie was nice enough and as far as we know it is the most economical place in Venice.

It's a brilliant place. Archie, the owner/operator,

spoke either 7 or 11 languages and I believe his

wife was Asian, I think.

I am still not sure how I came across Archies but it

definately made up for a coolish drizzly Venician

winter. I cannot remember a lot because we came to

experience and compare the Venetian Carnival to the

Lucerne Carnival. However, Archie and his wife, I

think, welcomed us into his house and made everyone

who stayed there feel like a part of there family.

A wonderful place to stay and if the Archie, from

back then (1980), is still there I am sure it is

still a warm and inviting place to stay. The prices

might have risen a bit in the past 22 years but I

the suspect it is well worth it.
