I really liked Brodie's Hostel... there were only about 35 beds in the hostel so it was nice and cozy. Plus, the beds were very comfy (I felt like I was staying in a really nice cottage). The showers are hot! There is a kitchen with a microwave, burners, etc. The location is fabulous - right on the Royal Mile and easy walking distance to the haunted tours and other major sights (and the Waverly train station too!). Laundry service is available. My only gripes: the price is a bit high and the staff wasn't very helpful or friendly (they said to ask them if we needed anything... but when I did they acted as if I was bothering them).

I'd highly recommend Brodies. I was looking for a place that wasn't going to be overloaded with your cliche backpacker party freaks and in Brodies I found it. Good hot showers, quiet dorms, and some truly interesting respectful people. The staff were great, and helpful, willing to give a first time Euro traveler a few tips. My only gripe would be about the fridges, way to small and full of expired food. All in all a great hostel experience.

I've stayed in three hostels in Edinburgh, but this was my favourite. The staff are lovely, the beds comfy, the showers excellent, huge kitchen. It's a bit pricer than others though.
