Tempting due to its low cost, but spending a bit more for a better place is well worth your money! This place is so gross that I can't believe we decided to stay there. To begin with, the room was a windowless box, devoid of AC or even a fan. Fortunately it wasn't hot outside when we stayed there. The mattress was one of the worst we'd ever slept on, like sleeping directly on a box spring. The sheets had hair on them (to be fair, the bartender got us fresh sheets after we pointed this out). The bathroom floor was dirty. The toilet was leaky, so it alternately trickled and filled continuously, all night long. The lighting was dim. The kitchen was broken-down and dingy. And there was loud music till midnight. Really, the bartenders were as nice as could be, but they couldn't save this place from being disgusting and a really poor choice for even the budget-minded traveler.

When i first arived in Nanaimo i walked around town for close to three hours looking for the hostel. When i found it i was upset to realize i had passed it several times without seeing it. The upside was i got to see parts of Nanaimo that i wouldnt have gone out of my way to see otherwise, and had i not been so tired and carrying a heavy backpack, it would have been a pleasent time. The hostel itself is situated almost directly on the waterfront, with beutaful parks and archetecter surounding. Inside the hostel there is a restauant where both travelers and commoners enjoy eating, with an airy open atmosphere. There is internet access near the dinning area. Connected to the hostel is a bar. At the time i was 18, and the legal drinking age is 19, so i got kicked out when i tried to sit down for a beer. But it looked nice and sounded like fun from the other side. I could hear the noises from the bar from my room, but it wasnt load enough to piss me off or make me lose too much sleep. The dorm room i stayed in had 3 bunks, or six beds. It had its own bathroom with a bathtub and shower, sink and toilet. The water was hot most of the time, but i dont recall it ever being cold. The beds were fairly comfortable, with wooden frames that had writings from past travelers that you could read as a bedtime story. There were lockers in the room but you had to supply your own lock, something i didnt have at the time. There is a kitchen down the hall with a stove and fridge, and i believe there was a microwave aswell. It had a small color TV, and pamphlets with info about different events around town. One of those things is bungee jumping, which i actually went out and tried with a friend that i made traveling from germany. Its quite the experience. Overall i enjoyed my stay at the Cambie, i would stay again, and next time ill be able to get in the bar to top it off. The staff that worked when i visited were kind and helpful. Check it out if your ever on the island.
