We stayed here September 2004 and would defo stay here again. The hostel feels small and comforable. The breakfast is brilliant but get there early or else there is nothing left. They do a pizza night during the week which was great. Papa Joe's, best pizza in NY. The hostel is at the bottom of harlem but dont let that throw you. Its not what it once was. There was loads of people sitting out on there front steps on some of the houses and for a white couple from the boglands of Ireland on there first trip to NY it seemed quite intimidating until they start waving at you and saying hello everytime they see you! Do go up into the heart of Harlem. You'll be very surprised! Overall its a great place to stay if you dont mind the long subway trips.
