Would I stay here again? No.

My girlfriend and I stayed in a double bed for 3 nights.

Character: The pictures posted on their website do not accurately depict my experience at the West End Studios. While the main entrance and front desk was nothing to write home about, our room was something else. Imagine a dimly lit room in which a paint shaker exploded and deposited an equal amount of highlighter blue, green and yellow all over the walls. Fortunately, the water damaged ceiling and heavily stained carpet were spared the circus colour treatment.

Security: The latest we arrived was 0030 hr and in our experience, the front door was never locked. The front desk is in a room off to the side, so it is not necessary to pass by to access the rest of the building

Location: The location is the only redeeming quality about this place. 15 mins by subway to Times Square and just a short walk to Central Park.

Staff: The staff at West End Studios fulfills the basic requirements of working behind a desk. They can take your money and give you a key. Providing any additional assistance to their “guests” seems to be beyond their scope of practice. Definitely check in before midnight, despite what the day staff says when you inquire about paying early as to avoid any confusion upon your return later that evening. In the hostels defence, they found us a room despite the miscommunication between their own staff. However, when it came to exchanging a pillow that looked like it was stuffed with a sleeping bag, it was impossible. If I was staying another night in this place, I wasn’t going to do it with my chin pressed up against my chest. I ended up finding a pillow of a reasonable girth on my own.

Cleanliness: Is awful the correct word? Sure! The carpet in our room was gross. When my feet were not in my shoes, I had then scrunched up as much as possible in order to minimize the amount of bare skin that had to touch the carpet. Thankfully the single dim fluorescent light made it difficult to identify all the stains on our blanket. The sheets on our bed seemed to share our concern for hygiene, as they would spontaneously spring from the mattress as if they were making an escape. As for the bathrooms, I generally don’t have a problem with shared bathrooms, but tubs that don’t drain and have the shiny surfaces replaced with black/brown stains, and walls with mysterious yellow drips that have solidified, are just plain disgusting.

Fun: We spent as little time as possible at this place. After the first night, I had to convince myself that it would be a waste of our limited time to look for alternate sleeping arrangements. Had our trip been any longer, we would have ended up staying elsewhere.

Facilites: 24hr pay lockers, laundry, internet.
