I live in Denver, but when I want to avoid the crowded ski resorts along I-70 and I-40 I come to Leadville, a reasonable two hours away. The hostel is within sight of the second tallest mountain in the lower-48 and in 20 minutes can be climbing it. You are also within an hour's drive to 15 other hikeable mountains over 14,000 feet tall. In the summer theres a nice lake and river rafting and mounatin biking all close by too. Winter there is cross country skiing just outside the door, and couple of ski resorts within a half-hour. Leadville itself is a continously occupied gold-and-silver-rush mining town from the 19th century where Molly Brown made her fortune. Its not that big, but has a half dozen resturants, a supermarket, and hospital. Leadville has a some extreme sports events - the one hundred mile mountain marathon among them you can join or avoid.
One the best things about the hostel on its personable hosts "Wild" Bill and Kathy. They'll chew your ear off with wonderful stories and cook you great breakfasts and dinners if you choose the food option. The hostel itself is a cozy converted ranchhouse with dorms and rooms of various sizes on the main floor and in the basement.
You probably need a car to reach the hostel, although It may still be accessible by limited public transportation. Greyhound goes from downtown Denver to Frisco on I-70 (so do more expensive ski shuttles). There there is a morning and evening commuter bus between Leadville and I-70 because many of the ski resort workers cant afford to live in the resorts, but in Leadville.
