My two kids, ages 8 & 6, stayed two nights in a private room for a trip to the aquarium this weekend. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hostel is within a five minute walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and there is a grocery store fairly close. The kitchen was tidy and pancake mix with syrup was provided for making your own breakfast. The bunk rooms had a bunch of beds in them (maybe 10 or more) so it might be hard to sleep in there. On our first night there was a group of teens in the kids play room, outside our door, making quite a bit of noise at about 9pm, I went out to ask them to be a little quieter even though it wasn't quiet time yet, but their chaperone was already there to ask them to be quiet and there was no noise after that. Each person recieves tokens for 7 minutes of shower time each day which seems like a short shower, but I found that it was plenty of time to get clean, just not soak in hot water and wake up. Our room had a double bed and a bunk bed, one chair, a lamp to read by, a large mirror, and a window to let in the fresh air. We were totally comfortable in our room and having a play room separate from the main lounge was fabulous because then the kids could play and do crazy kid stuff without disturbing other travelers. The staff was friendly and helpful. There are 2 day for the price of one aquarium tickets at the front desk. The pay phone requires a phone card for long distance calls, you cannot use change except for local calls. Overall, our stay at this hostel was great and we will definitely stay there again. We slept better here than at hotels in the area, it was quiet, comfortable and clean.
