Traditional courtyard setting with a friendly atmosphere, September 25, 2007
Reviewer: pauljaymes from London, England

Pros: Keycard security, free internet, excellent great wall tour, cheap (oh so cheap) beer.
Cons: Staff not always the most helpful (this is China!). Toilets are in a separate block.

The Far East hostel is set around a traditional courtyard in Beijing's famous hutong (narrow streets). Across the street from the courtyard entrance is the Far East hotel where you check in and can use some of the facilities.

Access to the well-appointed dorms is by key card so security is pretty good. Each dorm has a wash basin. On the ground floor of the accommodation block is a common area with 2 free internet terminals. In the basement are shower cubicles and washing machines. Toilets are in a separate block on the other side of the courtyard, annoying if you need them at night. The toilet block is incredibly clean by Chinese standards but westerners tend to find it so-so.

The courtyard also boasts a cafe selling a range of meals, and a shop where you can book tours, train tickets and buy snacks (eg crisps, oreo biscuits) and large 640ml bottles of Tsingtao beer at the bargain basement price of 2RMB - that's about £0.15 or US$0.30 (Aug 2006 prices) - no doubt this contributes to the incredibly sociable atmosphere!

If all the free internet terminals are busy, or you want more time, there is a little internet cafe pretty much next door to the hostel. There are also many fantastic eateries and handy shops in the surrounding Hutongs. Walking to Tiananmen square takes about 15 minutes. There is a subway station about 10 minutes walk away. Rickshaws hover around outside the hostel most of the day and night, be sure to negotiate first!

The hostel/hotel organises excellent great wall day trips between Jinshaling and Simitai. You get to walk from one access point to another and experience both restored wall and unrestored original wall. Unlike some wall locations the crowds are minimal, and the views across the mountains are incredible.

All in all I really enjoyed my time at the far east hostel, it was by far the most sociable place I stayed in China.
