The hostels in KK are generally well run & clean! the chinese malay people are very hard working & tidy people.

Borneo Backpackers is no exception to this rough rule. the dorms are really cheap, around us$6/night or 25RN. private double is fairly well priced but they only have a couple so book a few days before you get there. The place is near the bars & restaurants, KK is a smallish but has everything western & malay. The locals are friendly & it's safe to wonder about late at night (to within reason).

Kota Kinabalu is yet another hub for seeing the rain forest or Orangutan Orphanage's all a short cheap airfare away (us$50 return - air asia)from KK airport.

There are some great reefs & Islands close to the hostel, we were recommended a guy called Allan Mah by the hostel & we did our advanced PADI coarse & it was quite cheap & alot of fun (http://www.angelfire.com/sc/allandive/)

BTW the food at Borneo Backpackers is very good. a couple of dollars will fill 2 of you up with tasty home cooked food.
