BUG review
With a large riverside balcony and views of Mt Warning, the location of this hostel is perfect. It is a cheerful little place with only 24 beds and colourful murals painted on the walls, accented with nice wooden tables and benches. The management is easygoing and amiable and offer free ice cream to guests every night. If you stay for three nights, you get a free trip to Mt Warning with bikes and canoes. The TV room is in a small shed set away from the house to keep the noise down at night. The atmosphere here is quiet and pleasant.

Quiet but friendly hostel unlikely to host many parties
29 December 2006

Pros: Quiet, colourful, over the road from an Olympic-sized pool
Cons: Stuffy dorms, limited bathroom facilities

This hostel seemed to not really be a backpacker hostel, in the usual sense of "young" people - there were more older people and families present when I was there. The dorm was uncomfortable as the outside temp was about 35C and the fan was struggling unsuccessfully to create a breeze - fortunately the public swimming pool was just over the road. The owner was friendly and knew a lot about the local area, and it was a quiet place to relax. Definitely not somewhere for party people. I'd stay here again.

My wife and I stayed in a double room for 3 nights in late Oct 03. This YHA doesn't have many rooms, so only a few guests stay at one time, so you get an intimate, relaxed atmosphere. Friendly Tassie really goes all out to ensure everybody's having a good time. He even takes time to get to know guests, which is a bit rare compared to what I see at other hostels. For such a small hostel, the kitchen and laundry is quite big, but some rooms are a bit small. Small TV in the garage, but then you'll be hanging out with others in the big common room. Every night at 9 p.m. guests get together for ice cream and get to know one another. Ask Tassie for use of bikes and canoe, and for the drive to and from the car park to climb Mt. Warning. This YHA is located just a short stroll away from the town's main street. The art gallery next door is a must, even if you're not an art fan. It's free anyway. No commercial strings attached, try the resto in the lobby of Imperial Hotel. Nice food at reasonable prices. The friendly owners were kind enough to have a chat and to get to know us.

I went to the Murwillumbah hostel about a year ago whilst travelling in northern NSW. It was a very pleasant place to stay - beautiful location on the river, comfortable and welcoming. The hostel owner was kind enough to drive me to and from the base of Mount Warning. Murwillumbah's a bit strange though...

this hostel is one of the best. no, it is not perfect, and that exactly is its charm. you have a big terrace overlooking the river, wonderful sooth wooden floors, a small kitchen with full equipment, a garden, a boat, a bbq. the owner, tassie, helps a lot to make it a stay like visiting close friends.
