BUG review
South Coast Travellers Rest is a small hostel in a nice house with polished hardwood floors, a fully equipped kitchen, a TV lounge with a fireplace and a nice outdoor area with hammocks and a barbecue. It has a cosy atmosphere. Guests have free use of bicycles, boogie boards, surfboards and fishing gear. It is located on the highway north of the town centre.
About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.
We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.

Most appalling, authoritarian, suspicious, condescending, management ever experienced in lodgings 30 December 2009
Pros:
The drive way out of the facility
Cons:
The patronising, abusive manager, the myriad signs, and the hard, very short bunks.

This was an awful experience for the unsuspecting. We were a party of 4 from ages 26 to 60+ looking for a night's accommodation in a town where everything else was full. Stone cold sober and arriving in a modern car, we were greeted by the manager from one's worst nightmare who rebuffed our spontaneous geniality and proceeded to harangue the 60+ yo group leader as though he was checking a party into a penitentiary. An awful person who should never have sought a vocation in the tourist industry. The facility is actually quite good except for the absurd proliferation of signs and the dreadful beds which make sleep for anyone over about 1.7m difficult. Boards at the end of bunks make it impossible for anyone over this height to stretch out. Mattresses were very hard foam squabs and pillows crushed out of existence. We paid $100 for 4 of us to share a small room with 2 bunks.Stay somewhere else lest your holiday spirits and impressions of Australia are dashed to pieces.
Pros:
Freebies! - bikes, surfboards, towels, fishing rods (& EXCELLENT advice about the 'unknown' places)
Cons:
That some rude guests have a hard time understanding the rules are there for everybody.

I write this in response to the first post that has been left here regarding the South Coast Travellers' Rest Guest House. WHAT A LOAD OF %#$@*!!! Yes, the hostel is older than others, but this is so much a part of its charm. I travel the east coast of Australia regularly for my job and have stayed at the Travellers' Rest on many occasions. As for the apparent rudeness from the person who you say greeted you, (I am assuming here that it is still Helen & Mark that own and operate the hostel....I may be wrong) I find this difficult to believe. Firstly, the owners of a business such as is The Travellers' Rest would not be in business for too long if they were rude to booked or prospective guests. Secondly, The Travellers' Rest website has excellent pictures and information regarding what the Guest House offers. And a lot of it completely free of charge I might add. Know anywhere in Cairns that offers anything like that? I would think not. And finally, if the Guest House smelt as you described it, I would highly recommend removing those 20 year old dead bodies from your grandparents house. Very unhygenic. And if you knew this supposed 'smell' that you say existed at the Travellers' Rest that you have tolerated for 20 years at your dead grandparents house, then the Travellers' Rest should have been just like 'going for a visit' to Grandma & Grandpa's house!!! What a ridiculous statement this person has made and I hope they read this and realise hoe silly they sounded to ANYONE who may have read it. You sound like a whining child, seriously. Travel outside Australia and see what bad treatment is TRULY like.I don't believe that the way this person was greeted, nor the condition of the Guest House was this persons true problem. She/he had obviously driven a long distance, were tired and cranky AS WE ALL CAN GET FROM TIME TO TIME, and has then decided to make an entirely unfair and false comment regarding what I consider to be one of the last friendly, unpretentious and beautiful places to stay. The owners are happy & friendly and more than pleased to suggest local tourist attractions to anyone interested. Mark (whom I believe is the owner) even took me fishing on his boat!SOUTH COAST TRAVELLERS' REST GUEST HOUSE???YEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After travelling up down the east coast from Cairns, I've never been greatly as rudely as the woman running this hostel. After belittling one of my travelling companions to tears for inquiring about our reservation (which we had made), we reluctantly stayed the one night since we pretty much had no other options in this dreadful town. The beds were uncomfortable and the whole place smelled kind of like my grandparents house (and they've been dead for 20 yrs). Do yourself a favour and don't stay here (better yet, avoid Ulladulla altogether).

I have to agree that all the signs everywhere are a joke. The manager was fairly nice but we felt like we were talked down to a couple of times. The plus is the cleanliness. I rate that.

you will never see so many notes, signs and warnings than this hostel. The management treats you like a kid until you are starting to feel uncomfortable. The intensions aren't bad, as I understand but there should be other ways of approaching guests to achieve their aim. Location: a little inconvenient, overall a clean hostel, nice walks near by. Note LP readers, they no longer do a shuttle service to national parks for insurance reasons (I was so disappointed). You can't hire a surfboard but you can get a MTB.

Good movies, good firealarm, no nosy owner and a nice and homely atmosphere in in a peaceful, little fishing town. Don't forget to pay a visit to the Blue Merlin.

If you're looking for small dorms, loud people and dirty all over the place, this is the place to go. The manager is a not very nice person who treats you like you have 10 years and the nly reason I've stayed there is because there was no other place.
