BUG review
This small and colourful hostel has a gorgeous common room with plush couches and television and a breezy outside lounge area with umbrellas and a fire pit. The kitchen is large and well equipped. Dorms are average but clean and the bathrooms are new. The reception staff are quite friendly and it is a good place to book tours and meet other travellers.

I had a friend staying at the cool bananas
supposedly the coolest backpackers hostel in agnes water
taking the premier bus, i went to 1770 backpackers cause they pick you up at 2.20am
in the morning i went to visit my friend to arrange our stay in agnes water
not only did they kick me out because no visitors are allowed in the premises
but one guy, a manager was rude to me, telling me to leave and and to go back to my hostel, because i didn't book with him
i wasn't even allowed to wait outside the hostel!later on, i eventually found my friend
he went to pick something at his hostel
so, politely, i waited outside
then the guy passed me, i greeted him genuinely
thinking that all of this was a misunderstanding
but again he was rude to meBackpackers spirit is friendly spirit to me
and it's not because we're not staying at the same hostel
that people should not mix!!
the managment should be more open mindednow we're spending the day at 1770 cause at least there, my friend is allowed to the premises!i decided to boycott such behaviourthank you
Great place but not much to do there and transportation is limited. nice to chill for a day or so on your way up the coast. guy who runs it is great. no a/c is the only bad thing.
purpose built hostel and theyve done a damn fine job!!
coutyard outside real chilled and they have fire there every night, large tv lounge and the dorms are very spacious..manager is mad and very welcoming!!plenty of trips to take like the scooteroos and kayaking at sunset, well reccomend taking a detour and staying here a few days!!!

This is honestly the best hostel i have stayed in. I had a major problem with my airline ticket and the owner bent over backwards to help me, including giving me a $10 phonecard for free! He is so nice. He also runs his hostel on the premise that if he trusts backpackers they will respect the hostel - and it works. its one of the best run hostels in oz.

This place has the potential to be great but just didn't cut it for me. I booked on the strength of the other reviews on here but was a little disappointed. Yes, the facilities are very good and everywhere very clean but to be honest the atmosphere was a bit cliquey, most of the staff were more interested in themselves than in doing much for guests and the owner was aggressive and just a little on the 'control freak' side when it came to any mess. He even burst into our room late at night and woke us up by shouting and swearing at a lad because a sand-filled ashtray had been knocked over. In all a bit disappointing.

Cool atmosphere, unlike some of the other places in Qld, and excellent kitchen area, though not much security. Met a guy who talked me into doing my dive course in 1770, and it was awesome. Went to Lady Musgrave for a day to finish my course, and that place is amazing. So good to have a cool place to return to at the end of a big day diving. Thanks to the crew at Cool Bananas & Dive 1770!

Am sure this will become a bit of a backpackers mecca in the not too distant future! Great chill out atmosphere and interior and exterior decor - Australia/Asian fusion - alot of effort has been put into this place. Certainly the best hostel in Antipodea. The town of 1770 itself is a refreshing escape from the madding crowd of the East Coast backpacker route due to only recent access of buses for the past couple of months!

I spent a week here, had a great time, and then left for Western Australia. After a couple of weeks I realized what I was missing. Two long bus rides and a cross-country flight later I was back at Cool Bananas and it was definitely worth it. It's the best hostel you can imagine - five minutes from a beatiful beach, chilled out, spotlessly clean, funky,... It's the cheapest place in Oz to learn to surf, and since it's not crowded you don't feel like everyone on the beach is watching you wipe out. Greg, the owner, has a lot of experience running a hostel and he designed and built this one. All I can say is, "Thanks Greg, I learned to surf here!"
