BUG review
Larrikin Lodge is in a quaint little blue house near the centre of Mackay. It has all air-conditioned dorms and nice clean bathrooms. There is laundry, a small above-ground swimming pool and a homely common room. There are plans to partly renovate the kitchen. The friendly management run the Jungle Johno eco-tours to Eungella National Park almost daily, weather permitting. They also help travellers look for work, so many of the guests here are on a working holiday.

the owners of larrikin lodge gave us a very warm welcome and made us feel very comfortable - in larrikin lodge you feel they really like being there with the backpackers, the athmosphere is very good! and we appreciated it a lot that we could stay there, using the sofas and kitchen, even after checking out, when waiting for the nightbus... thank you!

Sorry chaps & chapesses but i disagree with the other reviews. This is one of the most uncomfortable hostels i have ever stayedin! The mattresses are 2" foam on wooden boards. I like to sleep & recuperate after a hard days travelling - something i was unable to do at this lodge. Beware, you have been warned.

I arrived here for the easter weekend, and the place rates among the best hostels I've stayed in (still counting at 120+, so no mean feat). The hostel is relatively small and personable. I'd spent most of the night on the bus and when I arrived around 7.30 in the morning, I was immediately assigned a bed so I could sleep a little. The rooms were pleasant, and there is a seating area out back, as well as a kitchen with TV lounge area. This is a family owned hostel, and the owners are very pleasant and helpful. When I got up on easter sunday a basket of easter eggs had been put out for guests to help themselves to, which was nice. Jungle Johnno's tours to Eungella National Park run from the hostel, and I spent easter sunday on one of these. I really recommend this tour. Our guide, Charles, seemed to know everybody in the district, and there was not much he didn't know about everything we saw; we did some walks, platypuss and turtle spotting, boomerang throwing, and it all made for a memorable easter. Most people miss out Mackay which is a shame, so why not drop into larrikin Lodge and take one of their tours. You will be glad you did.

An old, rambling house, which is delightful to look at. You share dorms with quite a few others, but they are comfortable, and don't have the spartan feel of many hostels. The hosts are lovely, and happily dropped me at the airport the morning I left. I was only sorry I didn't stay longer to do some of the great tours on offer.
