BUG review
This is a fun hostel in three colour-coded buildings - each with their own kitchen - in the heart of Mooloolaba. It has a great swimming pool with a volleyball net and a lively outside common area where they host events every night. There is a pool table, table tennis, a barbecue and guests have free use of bikes, surfboards, body boards and kayaks. It is located just two blocks from the beach, and they organise trips to the Glass House Mountains, the Eumundi market and the Australia Zoo, among others. Dorms have en suite bathroom facilities and are clean, if a bit old. It has a great party atmosphere but doesn't overdo it.

Well where do I start. I stayed almost 4months in Mooloolaba even though my plan was to keep travelling further down the coast after 4nights. You just get sucked into the fun vibe in the hostel, I couldnt help but fall in love with the long and short term guests. And I can't forget about the staff who are absolutly amazing. As the dorms go, you can choose between an ensuite or shared bathroom. Both are great. I opted for the share bathroom as I was a bit low on cash but it was definate value for money. The shared bathroom is kept so clean unlike others which I was forced to use further up the coast. There are 4 people to each dorm, each floor has their own kitchen so there's not a big dive for a cooking hob at dinner time. You get so many free things in the hostel, which I found hard to come across in any of the backpackers I have stayed in. They have free stand up paddle lessons each morning which is so much fun (that is if you can actually stand up which I finally got the hang of). There are also loads of surf boards and kayaks free to hire, you can bring them to beach which is a five minute walk away or around to the canal next to the hostel. Best for us people with a very low budget is the free saturday BBQ. Such a big money saver and the potato salad is soooo nice!! All in all, I'm so glad I decided to stop in Mooloolaba and stay at this hostel. I could definatly say that the experience I had here is what I came to Australia for. Don't miss it, believe me!!

I found this place to one of the best hostels I've stayed at. I stayed for three days but if it wasn't for being on a tight time schedule I would have stayed for much longer. The hostel was very friendly and the two guys that run the place couldn't do enough for you. Any questions we had of the area they were more than happy to help and were quite happy to sit around talking to you. The hostel has a vast array of movies for hire which was nice to kick back and chill; and the pool area was one of the best I've seen. The whole place is spotless - they obviously take great pride in their hostel. My only slight complaint would be that the kitchens are very well stocked but this was not enough to spoil the place.

I definately advise people to stop in Moolooaba and check this place out.

Friendly and clean. I would recommend this place to anyone passing through the Sunshine Coast region. It has a nice pool and is within walking distance of the beach. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. The only bad thing is that there are no ovens in the kitchens, only hotplates and a microwave.

I recently stayed at the beautiful mooloolaba backpackers hostel and to my surprise I was blown away by how nice the manager was, after reading the reviews on this web site I was very unhappy to find that group I was travelling with had decided to stop at mooloolaba. I was dreding to spend the night at a hostel with such an unkind manager, when I arrived I went to book in only to find the manager was at the reception desk and i was totally surprised to find he was the nicest hostel manager I have met on my 3month journey. He was kind in every sense of the word, he offered to drive myself and the group I was travelling with to the shopping centre and pick us up, he was helpfull in letting us know exactly what there was to do around the area unknown to us, when it came to the lock down of the verandahs he explained calmly to us the reason for the verandah curfew and told us thet if we could keep the noise down he would come back and lock it in a couple of hours. Overall I would say that any bad reviews of this beautiful hostel have been written by unhappy people.

I had the pleasure to stay at Mooloolaba Beach Backpackers during New Years Eve 2002. The place was clean and well kept. The staff at the time were informative and most helpful. During the New Years Eve many people conregated around the tables below and really had a good time. Some would go out and party it up Mooloolaba style and many also stayed around the backpackers simply enjoying each others company. There wasn't any kind of curfew enforced and the noise level never rose above the general new years eve level. So, overall it was a great experience.. so great in fact, I vowed to return the next year.

So what went wrong???

I had booked my room 2 weeks previously to ensure I had a spot for New Years, but I rang the day before just to assure them I was still coming. However my booking was never written down! Not to worry, there were still a few beds left. Mistakes do happen. I arrived and checked in, only to discover that they had given my room away! (I confirmed.. I arrived on time..) So they happily offered me a mattress to sleep the third person which I could handle, after all, I'm an experieced backpacker and not stranger to 'roughing it' for a couple of nights. But it was when the NEW MANAGER wanted to charge me full price, I almost flipped out. He wouldn't negotiate or even let me speak. It was then I realised I was dealing with a very arrogant little toad of a man, and with no where else to go (everywhere in Mooloolaba is fully booked at that time of year) I very reluctantly accepted. I went to inspect the room and my heart sank. There was stale old bread in the sink, electrical sockets were hanging off the wall, the television had been removed, the sheets were stained etc etc. So, I put all of this behind me and I promised myself I was going to have a good time. But when 10pm came around.. it was all over. There was the manager yelling, shouting and arguing.. generally bullying all the guests to 'go to bed or get out!'. TEN PM!! ON NEW YEARS EVE! I couldn't believe it.. this guy was a major downer. Same thing happened the night after. It was truly amazing to see everyones happy, joyous faces to turn so sour, so quickly at the sight of this manager doing the rounds at 10pm.

I hope the story wasn't too boring.. Just letting you know what you might be getting yourselves into.

Its a great spot in a perfect location. I recommend that if you plan to stay here that you call before you go, to ask if they are under new management yet.

Surely, Mr Nazi Manager's days are numbered there or someone like me is bound to take him out with a lead pipe. :(

Pros: Great location, right accross the road from Mooloolaba Bowls Club ($1.10 pots at Happy Hour!!), close to 24hr store and a great chicken take-away (Kakadoo I think it's called), friendly staff (other than the Nazi Manager)

Cons: THE MANAGER! He is the one who enforces a 10pm curfew, ripping people off, argumentitive, arrogant, generally a guy you'd like to avoid. The motel rooms are dodgy.. perhaps this manager is cutting corners (Wouldn't suprise me)

Conclusion: DONT GO UNTIL A NEW MANAGER IS FOUND!

The hostel wasn't too bad although it could have been cleaner. Location is a bit out of town but its still in walking distance.

There isn't much choice in Mooloolaba for backpackers so that's perhaps why the owners feel they can get away with demanding to see your "f**king keys" when you arrive back in the evening.

The hostel was ok but nothing special. I would definitely get a dorm with ensuite as the other bathrooms flooded. The hostel is centrally located, but there isn't a huge amount to do there. The bar lacked atmosphere. There were also a disturbingly large amount of cockroaches there. I wouldn't stay there for more than 1 night.

Worked at the hostel: loved it! New and clean. Squeaky beds but hard matrasses. Nice pool, fine beach. Good surf, big supermarket, McDonalds, 2nd hand book store and La Porchetta all nearby. Great place to crash for a few months, like I did...

Theres not much variety of accomodation in Mooloolaba, but this is a pretty good hostel. The facilities are good, its laid back, drinking games were going on outside by the pool, and the staff are a friendly bunch.

Be sure to see the sunset over the beach, its fantastic, trust me.
