BUG review
Tasman Backpackers is a large hostel with an institutional atmosphere but the hostel's size means that there is room for more common areas than Devonport's other hostels. Facilities include a cinema, a common room with a pool table, fireplace and television and a fully-equipped kitchen. Internet access is $5 per hour and Wi-Fi access costs $5 a day. However the amenities and accommodation is of a very poor standard and the cheap prices don't compensate for the lack of atmosphere.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.

This is a sprawling place with lots of rooms, and not bad facilities. I was there at a quiet time however, and there was not a single other person staying there. The dorms are quite big, but very bare and dull. No linen comes with the beds, and they are very basic, but the hostel is also very cheap. I paid just $12 a night there.

A negative point is that the hostel is way out of central Dewvenport - not too far to walk if its a nice day, but not pleasant in the rain.

We stayed here for 2 nights and took advantage of a top tour to Cradle Mountain - $50pp. The owner is nice and the hostel was an old nurses accommodation, it was quite drafty as middle of winter, but the duvet supplied for the double rooms was excellent! There are some longer staying residents there who are strange to say the least, but every night @ 6:30pm there are FREE cakes and bread for all!
