BUG review
Apollo Bay Backpackers is a small cosy hostel in an old house on a quiet residential street a short walk from the centre of town. Facilities include a common area with a small fully-equipped kitchen; a TV lounge and internet access ($5 per hour). There is also a nice outdoor area with a barbecue and a front garden where you can feed the birds in the morning.
About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.
We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
Price Dorm bed $22 Double/twin room $55
Prices include breakfast Prices are in Australian dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
We stayed in the second house with the doubles. The living room seemed like a refuge for worn-out furniture from the early 70s that had been tossed out on the street with a small sign saying "free." The mattress sagged more than any I've seen. The window and curtains were dotted with dead bugs. The bathrooms seemed like they were superficially clean. Another room was stacked with used mattresses. On the plus side, there was juice, cereal and bread for breakfast. If we had to do it over again, I would have used the Automobile Association guide to find a budget motel or stay in another city.

rooms. It's not fancy, but it's clean and comfortable. Basic, no-frills, friendly, they even provide cereal and bread for free breakfasts.

I ended up at Apollo Bay Backpackers New Years Day and found the place very friendly and easy going. I had never been to a backpackers before and did not know what to expect. I enjoyed the experience a lot and look forward to going back.

This backpackers is pretty cheap. The place is a bit shabby and the facilities...well, I don't know of any facilities to speak of. I didn't like the staff. I was dissapointed with the place and the rooms were like shoe-boxes. It is a place to stay but I like a bit more out of a backpackers. Nothing was stolen.

We had friends stay at this place, we checked it out and the owners were really friendly and outgoing. The rooms are smaller than the Surfside, but the atmosphere is better. If you want big rooms and views - go Surfside, if you want friendly atmosphere and nice people, stay here.
