BUG review
This new purpose-built eco-hostel was architecturally designed to maximise passive solar energy and is tastefully decorated with polished concrete and wood floors, light colours and lots of natural light. Facilities include a nice fully-equipped kitchen, a dining area, a lounge with a fireplace, an internet room ($6 per hour; Global Gossip) with Wi-Fi and a TV lounge with a widescreen on the ground floor and another lounge and kitchen upstairs. There is also a rooftop sundeck and a barbecue area on the balcony. It is one of the best hostels in the country and certainly the best on the Great Ocean Road.

We stayed here in Dec 06. We had a double room which is basic but clean. As this seemed a new building it had great kitchen facilities on each level. It also had large lounge areas including one on the roof. Good location short walk from good beach and shops.The only bad thing was as it was a new building it looked nice but everything sounded loud at night.

I visited Apollo Bay about 4 weeks after its late 2005 launch and concur with the Ikea tag but it should soften a bit as it evolves. I missed the odd crockery feel of some of my favourite Aussie hostels but the location close to the beach on the Great Ocean Road & facilities will win many fans. The garden beds & parking needed a bit more work but the place is so new allowances should be made. It's great if you are interested in eco design and sustainability: plenty of ideas for those planning renovations back home. Don't miss Cape Otway lighthouse: the most southern point of mainland Australia, about 30 mins drive away.

Staying at Eco Beach is like walking into IKEA. The place is brand new, all shiny chrome, glass and funky concrete.The kitchens are amazing, big enough to let everyone cook and with brand new cutlery and crockery.I`m not joking when I say its like IKEA, practically everything has the IKEA logo stamped on it. The beds, bedroom lights, cups, saucers, sofa`s.. You name it, its come from IKEA....The lounge area is great, super warm fire, and comfy sofas. The dorm rooms are large, with your own locker and a maximum of 4 beds per dorm. The walls are a funky kind of breeze-block design, which might not be to everyones taste, but was fine with me. There`s loads to do, hire bikes explore the great ocean road. Be warned though, that if you go for the surf lessons, check the surf first. The company recommended by YHA tried to take us surfing when the water was as flat as a pancake..Overall, there`s very little to fault this hostel. The staff are great (like most YHA`s) and even had a tiny puppy who roamed the place. I enjoyed my stay there, and its definatly a stopping off point the next time I do the Great Ocean Road. I have to apologise to all the other backpackers I met there, who implored me to keep this place a secret... This one is too good to stay a secret for very long...
