BUG review
This is a nice hostel done in gold rush period architecture overlooking the Soveriegn Hill outdoor museum, about 3km south of the city centre. Facilities are good and include a big, clean kitchen and landscaped garden barbecue areas. The atmosphere is not as lively as most other hostels.

I had a good night and day here last year. I was going en route from Melbourne to Adelaide, and as all hostels in Melbourne were full with the world cup on, I decided to stop in Ballarat before heading on to Adelaide.

The Sovereign Hill goldmining town is a great place, which should definitely not be missed ; its like stepping back in time. The YHA is right next door, and as a guest you get a special deal on the ticket price. Mine was good for both the afternoon I arrived and next day. You check in through the Lodge reception, and I can honestly say that the staff were great. I had a late bus on the night, and they were really good with storing my bags and stuff, and when I was at a loose end they gave me access to a TV room to watch some sport. You must not miss Sovereign Hill and the YHA is the most convenient place to base yourself for it.

Check in staff at nearby Lodge unbelievably rude & extremely unhelpful. However, the hostel rooms were clean & the beds comfortable. The kitchen & communal area are open plan & all of the rooms open out into it.Ideal location for Sov Hill.
