BUG review
Albany Backpackers has lots of character with murals covering many of the walls. It is a clean and well maintained hostel with good facilities that include the usual kitchen, laundry, internet access, pool table and barbecue plus a cinema-style TV lounge. Like most hostels there is free tea and coffee although here they go a step further and also serve homemade cakes to their guests every day at 6.30pm.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.

This place is nothing special, just your average small town backpackers. The facilities are adequate. I only stayed there 1 night, when passing through on the easyrider bus. There's some good pubs nearby if you want to spot a few mullets (!), and a nightclub in which we spotted about as many as a dozen people!

I was here in October 2002 and found the place to be laid back and friendly. The hostel prepares cheap evening meals that were good value and of course, there's the complimentary chocolate cake every night (yum!). I forked out the dough for my own room but from what I could see, the dorms were fine. The location is handy and everyone gets free internet once a day.
