BUG review
What was once a great hostel has been neglected over the past few years and the general opinion among travellers is that it lives up to its name and truly is Broome's Last Resort, however it really isn't so bad when compared with many hostels elsewhere in Australia and there are signs of some work being done to improve things a bit. Although a bit shabby, it has a good atmosphere and the dorms are air-conditioned. Amenities include a kitchen (no oven), laundry, internet access plus a bar and open-air common area with a pool table and a swimming pool surrounded by palm trees. The Last Resort has a handy location and it is less than five minutes walk from the airport, the town centre and the bus station.

wow, maybe the last resort has come under new management cos i thought this place was alright. after a horrible few days at cable beach backpackers, I decided to stay somewhere in Broome town centre.

the guy who gave me my key was friendly and also gave me sheets, pillow case, pillow and a mattress liner and pillow case liner which looked in good condition and recently washed, the dude did say they bleach the liners all the time.

The pool is small but nice and the rooms are basic but very cool esp in Broome as you need it.

ONly downside was I had a few friends who were travling by campervan from Darwin, came to see me the hostel are funny about guests being signed in and you are not allowed to drink in the bar unless you are a guest or staying there. One of the guys that worked there was a little rude telling them they cant park or camp in the car park of the hostel over night - they just seemed to assume the guys were gonna do this

In many ways this is the worst backpackers in Broome – I’m told it used to be great but it has gone seriously downhill over the past few years, so now the only people who are staying here are long term residents working in the mines or on the buses. Alas, a few people – like me – always end up having to stay here when the Kimberly Klub is fully booked. A bad mistake – and indeed the Last Resort really is just that (the name is oddly appropriate) - it is one of the few Hostels in Australia to have lost its YHA accreditation due to the poor state of the facilities.

Firstly, because most of the residents are not backpackers but long – termers (and hard-drinking blokes at that) they will rave about it as if it is the best place ever – however if you are only in Broome for a week or so you will probably not be welcomed.

The place has a very run-down feel, with peeling paint, filthy rooms, and bathrooms that… well, the fact that the bathroom signs were nicked from the Nippon Inn when THAT closed down says it all.

The bar is cheaper than some of the places in town – but the bar at the Kimberley Klub is much better (the bar there is now called Tokyo Joe's after that club in town in turn closed down).

There IS free breakfast (well, a free cup of coffee and cornflakes) and there is an OK pool, plus it is cheaper that the three other backpackers in town – but I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone other than a hairy biker.

Fine if you are a long term resident or desparate

The upstairs bathrooms need a mjor overhaul - they may be cleaned each day but it doesn't make a difference. The hostel may advertise as offering loads of facilities but we were not told about any of them. when checking in were not told about free breakfast or lifts to the bus stop. Generally the staff we encountered were not that helpful. The rooms are expensive for the quality (we had a double) and we only stayed here as the Kimberley klub had no rooms. I wish we had payed a little extra for a motel. There may be a good atmosphere for long term residents but this means that people only staying for a short time miss out.

Fancy a dorm reeking of urine? This is the place for you.

I spent 3 nights at the Last Resort, which is about the 30th hostel I've stayed in throughout Australia. The dorm I had for the first night was fine. I had to move to another dorm for the second night, and when I went to bed that night I discovered that there was a guy in the room who was constantly wetting himself - I'm guessing he was an alcoholic. Even on the occasions he was awake and realised he needed the bathroom, he was unable to control his bladder and there would be a series of urine splashes between the dorm and the toilets. The dorm REEKED. I reported this the following morning, and was told that management would be doing something about it that day. When I returned to the dorm to go to bed that night, not only was the guy still there and the place still stank, but management were still checking new guests into the room! I checked out the following morning, asking why this problem hadn't been dealt with and why new guests were being put in a room that was obviously not fit for humans - I received no answer. Given the high demand for hostel accommodation in Broome, I suspect that management realises it can afford to cheese people off because there'll always be new ones coming. This is also reflected in the state of the hostel itself - grubby bathrooms, dorm bins not emptied regularly, kitchen with stinking fridges, etc.

There also seemed to be a lot of long-stay residents. In my hostelling experience, that tends to mean the residents don't look after the facilities as well, the dorms are messier, and the atmosphere isn't as good because people have already formed into little cliques. I guess this last point isn't an issue if you are one of the long-stay residents ...

I would whole-heartedly NOT recommend staying at this place. I heard better reports of the Kimberley Klub, though even that wouldn't be to everyone's taste due to the walls between dorms not reaching to the ceiling so you can hear conversations from all round the hostel. Seems like a good business opportunity to open a half-decent hostel in Broome ...

Oh my word!, how can people possibly put this place down, its is the best hostel EVER. I myself was there between May and September 2004 and shall be going back for more in October without doubt!. The guys that run the place are awesome and I had the best time with them. I was only meant to be staying for a week and ended up staying for over 4 months and dont regret a day!. They make you feel very very welcome and they are heaps of fun. I met the best people there and am still bessie mates with two of them. The only people who put negative feedback on the 'Lastie' are probably the ones who didnt want to get involved in the fun and games, bleugh to you all!!! hahahaha. See you soon, Paulie, Maz, Pumpkin, Jase, Jared, Rhino and Freo! xx

They know not of whjat they speak. Popped into Broome for a fleeting visit, and got trapped in the Lastie for nigh on six weeks!!! It's that good. As Scouse Robbie says somewhere below, give your regards to Big Paulie, this time from a man called MUD.
