BUG review
Carnarvon Backpackers is located right in front of the sea. The old furnishings make this hostel feel a bit shabby, but it has a lot of character. The bathrooms are colourful and the dining areas are a good place to meet other travellers. Facilities here include table football, a TV lounge and trampoline. Bikes are available to rent.

Pros: On the waterfront, near shops, nice relaxation areas, plenty of work if you want it.
Cons: Some of the plumbing - but it is being fixed. the place has character

We had a lovely time, Gorgeous weather in winter - June, July, August Maximum 24-27 degrees Celcius minimum 13-16 degrees Celcius sunny skies, hardly ever rains

The owner, Cathy has come back to manage the place, as it was pretty disasterous with the previous guy, she has fixed it up alot, renovated the dorms and fixing plumbing etc.

Plenty of work if you want it - cathy will arrange it for you on plantations, hospitality, outback stations, fishing industry, $20 per night or $100 per week or $50 for double room, you can stay for days or months.

Plenty of social areas, there is the 'red shed' with video and pool internet cafe.

Carnarvon is right in the middle of heaps of plantations, you can get free fruit and veg if you work on the plantations, there is work on the local pubs or you can help around the hostel if you want to stay for a while.

Without doubt the worst hostel I have ever stayed in. Unfortunate as the place does have potential but harnessed badly by the staff. This place could not survive in a town with more competition for accommodation. Having been removed from the 'social' area halfway through a game of pool, the owner (forgotten his name) offered a bigoted and blindingly blunt view of the world forcing me to have denoted him a racist, even though he makes his income from 'foriegners'. Needless to say I didnt stay for any longer than 1 night but some of the feedback from people who had been there a while taught me a few things about the owners (apparantly his wife is worse and was compared to Hitler). They close the entire hostel between 12 noon and 2p.m. every day to 'clean',however, the place is dirty. If you can, stay elsewhere.

I stayed in a single room that had the worst bed I have ever tried to sleep in, with dirty, stained linen that I had to shake dead bugs out of. The computers were broken, the smoke alarm battery warning for the kitchen was beeping all night and the manager wouldn't even look at it. Don't bother going in the girls bathroom at night because it has a timer switch on the light that only lasts about 2 minutes, so you are left in the dark. The manager will take your money, and maybe give you a fan, as there is no airconditioning, if he feels like it. My advice is not to stay here unless you are truely desperate.

1 star is too much for this dump. Dirty, disorganised, and crawling with insects. Bed bugs galore - blocked drains - unsanitary toilets - and a hostel owner without a clue. i won't mention her personal problems, but i assure you she has plenty. Nasty hostel, crap little town, just keep on truckin'. Other hostel users were very pleasant though! That was in 2002, things may have changed. But i doubt it.

This place has the potential to be pretty decent, but things have gone terribly wrong here. The woman who runs it is a nightmare. She goes so far as to demand that people leave the premises immediately after checking out so they don't cost the hostel money by using the facilities. At one point the plumbing had backed up causing a room to stink. When a friend of mine notified her she told him not to come into her livingroom (which is attached to the main office that noone was attending) and continued to watch TV. The bathrooms were constantly out of toilet paper and when I informed her of this she seemed incredably put out... I ended up taking it to the bathroom myself! Dishes had to be rented, and when I returned them to her she examined them ridiculously closely and pointed out that they were still wet. I pointed out that her tea towels were soaking and manky and there was no way I'd be able to get them bone dry, so she reluctantly gave me my deposit back.

I had picked fruit before and knew about the importance of getting to a place at the right time and made VERY sure that there was indeed work in Carnarvon before going there. Upon arrival she informed us that, in fact, there was no work yet. Do your picking in wonderful Donnybrook (stay at the Brook Lodge) or in Kunnunnerra and avoid Carnarvon like the plague!

Please spread the word about this place! As long as she (I regret not getting her name) is running this hostel, expect the worst.

We arrived at Canarvon B/packers off the easyrider looking for fruit picking but soo changed our minds. The hostel is one of those places which could be pretty good, but just isnt... the staff dont seem to care much as they know they are going to get some trade from those looking for work. The erratic office hours are sooo true as even though we had booked and they knew our arrival time, there was still no one in the office for another hour. To sum up, DONT STAY HERE!! Its the worst hostel I have stayed at in WA!!!
