BUG review
The backpackers’ accommodation at the Potshot Hotel complex is nicely air-conditioned with comfortable mattresses on the bunk beds. The hostel has clean bathrooms and a spacious kitchen but the common area in front of the kitchen is furnished with cheap plastic chairs and dominated by television. The bar (the Beer Garden) is the nicest part of the complex and is a good place to meet other travellers and there is also a small swimming pool, although the pool isn’t big enough to cope with all the guests during peak season. The complex also has accommodation in motel-style double rooms and pricier hotel rooms.

We went on a back-packing road trip in WA, all the way up to Exmouth. No problems with youth hostels UNTIL we got here. The accommodation is basically rows of tin huts which have been turned into accommodation. We specified air con in our room, but the air con was so old there's no way it had worked for years, so it just blew warm air. I would estimate the unit was about 15-20 years old. It certainly hadn't been serviced for some time. The en-suite bathroom was dirty and smelled like somebody had died in there it was so bad. The shower was broken & could not be turned off. The linen on the beds was dirty and had not been cleaned. We had our very own cockroach. We immediately went to reception to get a different room/cancellation but it had closed and we could not get hold of any staff. Unable to get any other accommodation that evening we stayed overnight then left first thing the next day. I am still waiting for a reply to my complaint. The place was vile and does not deserve to be a part of the YHA organisation. I wish somebody had told me about this place beforehand; I hope I can now save somebody else from going there.

PACKED IN

I stayed during the low season, when other hostels in the town (e.g. Ningaloo Club) have a policy of rewarding travellers by spreading them out with some couples having a Dorm to themselves. In Excape they put everyone in one room until it is full then to the next dorm.

WOKEN UP

We were in the first Dorm they fill, room 407, and were woken up at 4am when new arrivals came from the Greyhound bus.

NEEDS A GOOD CLEAN

The room still had linen and baskets from previous tenants, including a loaf of bread which was out of date for a week.

NO UTENSILS

The kitchen had no utensils so people had to use Swiss Army Knives to prepare food and fry food with a fork or spoon.

NO A/C

The Dorm had an air-conditioner but it was not turned on at all during my stay in which Exmouth experienced temperatures of 37 degrees - with 7 people in the room it got very hot.

UNWELCOME

The hostel is part of a larger hotel complex, as such, we backpackers felt that the reception staff were disinterested in the needs of the backpackers onsite, we don't know if they were more friendly to higher paying guests. No backpacker I spoke to felt welcome here, even though we were polite and friendly at all times.

NO DROP OFF

They picked me up from the Greyhound bus, but would not drop me off after my stay, so I had to book a taxi.

$20 FOR A PLATE

A plastic plate was stolen out of my basket and they charged me the whole $20 deposit for the plate (which would be worth $1-2 at the most).

If there was a 0 star option, I would have selected that!

Stayed here for 2 nights in Jan 2004. Excellent bar and pool. My room was great. Very clean and comfortable and quiet. I loved it! Reception staff helpful and friendly. Recommend it if socialising isn't that high on your agenda!
