BUG review
Margaret River Lodge has the best atmosphere of the Margaret River hostels. This eco-wise YHA is a 15-minute walk from the town centre and the location means that there is enough space for the 120-bed hostel to have a volleyball court, soccer pitch and a swimming pool plus a nice barbecue area with an outdoor dining area. There is also the usual TV lounge, internet access, laundry and a fully-equipped kitchen and guests can rent bikes and surfboards. It is clean and well maintained hostel.

We Thought, after staying in many clean YHA hostels in New Zealand that this YHA hostel would be the same. But that was not the case. This place was a bit messy, very noisey, due to many people drinking alcohol, and quite smokey from cigaretes. My wife had to do the dishes left over from others early in the morning. And our couples rooms were old and really needed help. The manager certainly was a nice person but seemed to let the hostel take it's own course, in other words he didn't manage the people or facilities well. We would not spend the money on this place again.

A great hostel for a couple as you are in the annexe, which is like a separate hostel but you have access to main hostel facilities. The TV lounge room in the annexe is nice and you feel like youget some privacy. Its gota nice pool and is a 10 min walk to town. The owner Jules, is helpful and a nice bloke.I would reccomend this to any couple and probably single travellers a like. You will need a car to get to the coast as Margagret river is set back off the coast and is a 20 min drive, You can hire one in the town.A top place to stay.

Not sure why BUG says this is 5 minutes' walk from town - I'd put it at more like 15-20, and that's from a 6'3" guy with long legs.I paid almost the same here for a bed as I'd paid in Melbourne, which I'm assuming is simply because Margaret River is generally an expensive place. I did not think the hostel was so great as to justify that.I think somewhere closer to the centre of town would be preferable.

My friends and I arrived here and thought the place seemed nice when we checked in. The lady at reception was lovely. The kitchen looked ok. Then we got to our room and were shocked. I've never seen such a dirty scum hole. There was dirt all over the paper thin mattresses, no paint on the bare brick walls, a bare concrete floor and cobwebs everywhere. We didn't stay even one night. We moved to Surf Point which is amazing. Really good there. Skip The Lodge and go straight to Surf Point.

I found this hostel was pretty standard apart from the manager who was excellent - very friendly and welcoming. THis place is probably a four star rating in the summer, but it was too cold to use all the facilities when we visited.

The rooms here are simple but warm & clean, the showers were excellent & the kitchen well maintained. What was most rememberable about my stay was how helpful & hospitable Steven the manager was.
