BUG review
Pohutukawa Lodge offers a recently renovated six-bed dorm right down the road from Pah Beach. This is about as in “town” as you’ll get on Great Barrier Island, with a grocery store and bakery next door, and the Currach Irish Pub right on the premises. The Currach is the only proper pub on Great Barrier and makes a great place to get a taste of the local life. There’s live entertainment some nights, a projection TV for the big rugby matches, and a small art gallery with works by locals. Accommodation and facilities are fairly basic (as is almost everything on the island). There’s a decent shared kitchen and a lush backyard with nice views of hills and fields. New owners are relative newcomers to the island but seem to have settled in quite nicely.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
