BUG review
Orama is a private Christian community on Karaka Bay, in a remote and gorgeous part of Great Barrier Island. A huge range of accommodation is available here, from tent sites to large self-contained cottages. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, gym with basketball hoops and badminton net and an outdoor trampoline. The backpacker dorms are as no-frills as they come, with tightly crowded beds. There’s an undeniable church recreation-centre feel to some areas, such as the small common room with Christian reading material on the library shelves. Still, it doesn’t appear that heavy-duty proselytizing is on the agenda. Orama does host large conferences, group outings, and spiritual retreats, though. There is a private jetty, and the Orama brochure mentions guests regularly pulling giant snapper out of the bay. As if on cue, we saw a happy fisherman holding up a whopper when we visited. Dinghies, kayaks and other gear can be rented, subject to availability.
