BUG review
Waiheke Island Hostel is located high up on a hill overlooking Onetangi Beach. The exterior is bright and cheerful, painted with colourful scenes of trees, flowers and dolphins. Inside is on the spare side, however, with a common area/TV lounge feeling empty and the kitchen area kind of drab. Accommodation is basic as well, but the grassy front yard with picnic tables serves up oh-so-sweet views over the beach and the bay far below. Onetangi Beach is Waiheke’s biggest, a 2.5km stretch of white sand, and is a popular spot for surfing and sea kayaking – or of course, doing nothing.
About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.
We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
Price Dorm bed $24 Single room $36 Double/twin room $54-$64 Prices are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
The good things about this hostel are the location and its relaxed beachy feel however some areas that let it down are the thin mattresses, and the showers which have inadequate water pressure.

Make sure you stop there ! Not many people stay on the island, so you should be be quiet there. Except on weekends when Aucklanders come over to party or chill out. I stayed there for 7 weeks. Enough time to realise how warm and helpfull the islanders are. Rob, the manager, can help you out on anything you like (canoe, bike hire, work, etc...for fishing talk to the crazy ticinese) If you pass by, make sure you say Hi to him for me and have a drink at the Stonyridge Vineyard. Have fun.
