BUG review
It’s all about good times with a dash of Maori culture in this fun and friendly hostel, which calls itself a traditional whanau (family) home stay. Guests are greeted with a hongi nose-press and sung a welcome song (and are expected to reply with a song of their own!) When the lights go down and the East As bus comes through, the party atmosphere commences. A communal meal is offered and Paul, the host, is great at breaking the ice and getting people to participate in a night of ribald sing-alongs and story-telling. Dorms are simple and clean. Facilities include a TV lounge and kitchen, a small bar, free use of kayaks, and – best of all – a spa pool right on the ocean, with simply spectacular views.

About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.

We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
