BUG review
This is a wonderful little hostel in a rustic old farmhouse. It is perched on a hillside with stunning views from every angle; even the bathtub has a view. There is a cosy lounge with a piano and fireplace, and nice gardens with hammocks. The dorms are cute and clean, with single beds in A-frame lofts; there are also separate huts with double beds and panoramic views. The kitchen is homely and beautifully maintained. The management and staff are welcoming and pleasant; they make breakfast with homemade breads as well as a famously delicious evening meal which costs $14. It’s the perfect alternative to touristy Akaroa town.

Do not miss this little piece of paradise. It is really really really worth to go. I spent 4 days there, eating yummy meals prepared by Gary and his helpers. The cruise is also worth to do: a few people on board and a lot to see!

I landed in Le Bons Bay by accident. Garry was referee-ing a school race with 16 children he had in his one room schoolhouse. There he was in the middle of the road, with children bounding up hill and over dale. Garry welcomed me and a friend to stay in his home in exchange for painting primer on the exterior of his home. His dog, Rose, was his constant companion -- and then Mark and I arrived. My time in Le Bons will never be forgotten. Yes, we got the painting done. Yes, we fell in love with the school children. Yes, we played guitar and sang on the beach, around the fire, with the moon rising over the sea. I returned to Le Bons Bay with my ailing mother in 2004 . . . just so she could see. We loved staying with Garry and his wife, Heidi and and their young children. The other hostellers were equally calmed in such a magical place . . . during dinner, during conversation, out on the sea with Garry in his aluminium boat. My ashes will be sprinkled in this glorious place.

Last year I worked and stayed at this backpacker for a total of about 5 months. It was really one of two not to miss places that I was in NZ (the other was Beaconstone on the west coast). The entire family that owns it are very welcoming and you feel at home after a few hours there. The meals are amazing (salad, 3 or 4 veggie dishes, meat or fish and dessert) and well worth the money. You get to eat at the table with all of the guests and a year later I still get emails from many of the people that I met there. A word of caution, if you do cook for yourself you will have to share the kitchen with the staff or wait until the 15 or so guests finish washing their dishes after the dinner. The boat trip is also really great -especially in the summer when there are dolphins out. there is also great scenery and Garry is great at telling about the area. I dont think that a trip to NZ is complete without visiting Le Bons Bay.

This was by far the best hostel we've been to. The atmosphere is great. Sitting around the table with around 15 others from all over the world all enjoying the great food... makes me wanna go back!. Don't miss the soccer-playing sheap Meadow :)

Garry and Heidi make your stay unforgettable and the terrific dinners created by Garry are just not to be missed. The atmosphere is the best I encountered in New Zealand. Something not to be missed on your trip.

Also don't miss the great boat trip on which you see the Hector dolphins.

The best hostel in New Zealand, this was the highlight of my trip. The owners Garry and Heidi provide a wonderfully warm and homely atmosphere. Garry cooks fantastic big dinners for everyone to enjoy and Heidi has created the most beautiful garden surrounding the house. There is a house cow, chooks, a cat for companions. It just felt like coming home.
