BUG review
This hostel is in a heritage-listed old post office and it has loads of character. There is a large common area with log fire, TV and sofas where you can usually find lots of travellers hanging out and chatting. The kitchen is nicely kept, although it can get a bit messy and is not very well equipped. The dorms are clean and simple and there are dorm beds in a Turkish-themed room that are less expensive and more fun than the regular dorm beds, although guests then have to go into the other building to use the bathroom. It has a good location and helpful staff.
About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.
We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.
Price Dorm bed $25-28 ($22-25 BBH) Double room $65 ($59 BBH) Twin room $60 ($54 BBH) Prices are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of all taxes.
Stayed here for a few days, was really nice, cool 'hippy' owners, music playing, internet, really nice 4 bed dorm, amazingly nice outdoor areas, though it is like a 10 minute walk in to town and another 5/10 mins to the whale watch place.

The owners of this backpackers have made a truly beatiful place, I stayed in a single room, so not sure how the dorms compare, but the kitchen and common areas are lovely, very very clean, have a nice English garden atmosphere surrounding the hostel - lovely plants. This hostel is a bit from the center of Kaikoura, so you'll so a bit more walking.

Upon arrival I thought I had found a nice hostel, in some respects I did. Here are the good bits:- Friendly (if a little too sarcastic) owner- Clean communal area with a fair amount of space- Big kitchenHowever, my main purpose of staying there was as a quick stop-gap to sleep, before moving on the next morning. Bad Bits:- the "twin dorm" I stayed in was tiny (no room to swing a cat) and quite dingey.- there wasn't anything in there except a bed (no bin, chair, mirror)- the bunk bed in there was the SQUEAKIEST I have ever seen.- we were right next to the bathroom and were kept awake nearly ALL night by the toilet flushing (and I am not a light sleeper!!)So all in all I would not recommend it.
