BUG review
Sleeping Giant is an older house with old, worn furnishings and facilities that aren’t very well maintained. It’s a working hostel, and when we visited, it was entirely booked out for the summer with seasonal workers from the Pacific Islands. Beds for casual travellers may not be available again this coming season. Facilities include free laundry, a basic kitchen and TV room and an outdoor patio with a pool table. There’s not much atmosphere at all, but the owner can arrange work.
About BUG's hostel reviews
This hostel was visited by one of BUG's team of hostel inspectors who write independent reviews and assess a star rating based on an objective assessment criteria.
We show up unannounced at hostels to write honest and unbiased hostel reviews. Many of BUG's reviews now feature videos and photo slideshows. BUG never receives payment for listing any establishment and BUG's researchers never accept free accommodation in exchange for favourable reviews.

This is a great place to make friends because of its easygoing atmosphere, i worked hard and made lots of money for my travels.
We always had barbeques and after our hot days work we would all go to the beach. This backpackers is cool and the manager helped me get work, transport and a permit, him and his family are really nice.
If you are travelling through Hawkes Bay in the fruit picking season and want to stop and make some money, stay there and you'll have a good time!
