BUG review
The Rotten Apple is on the top floor of an old hotel right in the centre of town. Dorm rooms are basic and named after famous figures in New Zealand and world history – Captain Cook, Jacques Cousteau, etc. There’s a big open TV room with a pool table and a separate quiet reading room. A small outdoor deck has a barbecue and there’s a kitchen with nice freezers and good storage. Like every hostel in Hastings, fruit-picking work is arranged here; but there’s more of a true backpacker hostel feeling to The Rotten Apple than most, and an overall friendly, fun vibe.

Nice stay: you're free to be crazy if you want; it would be amazing with free internet connection for the people like me that spend a lots of houres on the net! In this place I'd been sharing my time, my food, my WINE, my experiences and my ..music. Happy that the people here enjoyed the sound of my guitar... the sound track of my life! See youMAURIZIO

I recently left the Rotten Apple after a 8 or nine week stay and have to say it is up there with my favourites. The new managment are two great guys. Help everyone with work, and any problems, take an interest in everyone, and joined in the fun. Everyone is made to feel welcome, and many people stay for a long time! Cheap as chips too, and the managers try to arrange as many discounts at local places as they can for everyone. Will be going back there next time im in NZ. Cheers andrew and chris for a great time.

New owners now and extremely helpful whether its finding you work or recomending places to see and visit. Clean and tidy hostel and and warm and friendly atmosphere. The perfect place to work from or explore the beautiful surrounding countryside. Strongly recomend, the best 5 weeks so far.

Don't get me wrong, staying at this backpackers was a memorable experience. I enjoyed the company of many fellow hard workers from all over the world but as soon as we returned home from a long hard day in the fields and felt like cracking open a cold one things started to go down hill. I think fun is banned here so don't go.
