BUG review
Enter this stylish hostel and take a step back in time; it’s set in Napier’s largest Spanish Mission/Art Deco style building, an old hotel that opened in 1932. The lobby is nicely restored, with big red couches and lots of great period details on display, including great windows and fireplaces. There’s also an excellent kitchen, a dining room and a small separate TV lounge. Rooms are good-sized, if a little bit more tired than the common areas. A downstairs bar and café, “The Cri” caters to backpackers, but gets lots of local action as well, and is a lively and popular place right in the centre of town. It is a unique place.

My husband and I arrived in Napier and booked one night at the Criterion Art Deco Inn. We decided to stay two additional nights, so we reserved our room. On the second day we were there we came back to our room and one of the guys that works at the desk asked us why we didn't check out that morning. We were very confused because we had already talked to the other guy and reserved the room for two more nights. Well, apparently someone wrote something wrong in the book and they had already reserved our room to another couple the following night. We explained that we had already reserved the room. Well, this guy did not want to hear it. He said we'll have to find somewhere else to stay. This is in the beginning of January when hostels book up pretty quick. We were furious!!! They wouldn't change it. We spoke to the other guy about the situation and he was apologetic, but wouldn't change the situation.

This was horrible customer service!

Loved our time there, the place has great character, you walk right out the door onto the main road, so you are in the middle of everything. One minute from the Visitors Centre and Marine Pde, five minutes from supermarket. Highly reccomended!
